THE SKINNY: While the record industry cries poverty every other week about “boo-hoo, people are getting their music from the internet,” “boo-hoo, people download singles and not albums,” “boo-hoo, we can’t rape our artists anymore because they’re going to self-distribute their own music like Radiohead and Prince if we’re not careful.”
Well, there wasn’t a lot of crying this week as Alicia Keys sold a whopping 742,000 of her latest CD AS I AM according to Nielsen SoundScan. This is the best first-week debut for a female artist since Norah Jones’ FEELS LIKE HOME from 2004.
But let’s look at the real reason AS I AM sold so well – Keys is an incredible performer, she doesn’t fall into formula and trends and the album is a great soulful mix of musical styles featuring a stellar vocalist and songs that actually have substance.
So if we were record executives, we’d stop your sobbing and start finding more genuine, talented artists like Keys and get them to deliver the goods. Screw pre-packaged novelty acts and “super-producers” who come in to make everyone sound like everyone else to make a few extra bucks. It’s all about standing out from the crowd and when you do just that, you get 742,000 album sales in one week.

It is not just the timbre of Norah Jones's voice that is mature beyond her 22 years. Her assured phrasing and precise time are more often found in older singers as well. She is instantly recognizable, blending shades of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone without sounding like anyone but herself. Any way you slice it, she is a singer to be reckoned with. Her readings of the Hank Williams classic "Cold Cold Heart" and Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You" alone are worth the price of the CD. Jones's own material, while not bad, pales a bit next to such masterpieces. They might have fared better had she and producer Arif Mardin opted for some livelier arrangements, taking better advantage of brilliant sidemen such as Bill Frisell, Kevin Breit, and Brian Blade; or if the tunes had simply been given less laconic performances. Jones has all the tools; what will come with experience and some careful listening to artists like J.J. Cale and Shirley Horn is the knack of remaining low-key without sounding sleepy--sometimes less is not, in fact, more. --Michael Ross
