Muslim cleric bans women from ‘sexual’ cucumbers and bananas
According to Fox News, an article in religious magazine el-Senousa suggests that somebody else – preferably a male relative – should cut the cucumber into small pieces should a woman want to eat it. Women were also advised to steer well clear of similarly shaped vegetables such as carrots and courgettes. The strict instructions have angered liberal Muslims and tweeters alike. The International Business Times said: ‘Many of the commentators are Muslims themselves, who have expressed their anger against the cleric for making Islamic religious practices appear unreasonable.’ Danish/Lebanese journalist Helen Hajjij added on Twitter: ‘So if Muslim women should stay away from cucumbers and bananas, should men stay away from melons?’ BikyaMasr.com said the cleric, identified only as a sheikh, was also asked how women handling these fruit and veg whilst food shopping should be ‘controlled’, to which he replied that the matter was between them and God.
