The opening sessions of the Southern Provincial Council had to be adjourned almost immediately it began when the United People's Freedom Alliance member Nishantha Muthuhettigama forcibly occupied the Chairman's seat.
When the sessions began yesterday morning, Chief Minister of the Southern Provincial Council Shan Wijeyalal de Silva proposed the name of Mohan de Silva to the post of chairman of the council while UNP provincial councillor Manusha Nanayakkara proposed the name Nishantha Muthuhettigama for the post.
With UPFA councillors objecting to Muthuhettigama's name being proposed claiming that he had not been sworn in, Mohan de Silva was appointed chairman of the council.
At this point, Nishantha Muthuhettigama forcibly occupied the chairman's seat giving rise to a tense situation.
The sessions were immediately adjourned.
