As usual, I would like to claim the fact that I hate politics in Sri Lanka and the Politicians as well because of their unreliable nature. But the fact remains that the future of the country depends on the voting system and the preceding president, so virtually, however much you hate politics, you have to have a stand for the betterment.
I would like to start my argument with a single point. The politics today is, undoubtedly I should say, governed by MR and his family. SL has 393 of it's highest ranking government officers from MR's closest relatives, which literally means that MR controls all that is been controlled by those 393 people. Further, it is said that there are more than 500 relatives of his who earns more than .2 M per month, but I wouldn't know the reliability of this fact so i would not reclaim it against MR. Coming back to the point I'm emphasizing here, MR even at the moment can virtually control every entity of the government and through his scapegoats, his iron fist will remain even if he has lost for some time. It is only fair to claim that, if he were to continue this any further, he would undoubtedly get a situation where, even if he loose from a election and been kicked out from presidency, he would still be able to exercise control over SL politics via his government high ranking officials. Now this creates a vast dilemma over the country since, it is more or less like the times when a King used to control the country. As he himself likes to be renowned as MAHARAJATHUMA, he is virtually very close to been one as well. For an example, it is rather doubtful that anyone other than the ones who has a R suffix to their names can do SL politics if MR were to be the president again. As you may be well aware, he is promoting himself as well as Namal R with every advertisement he telecasts in TV channels. If he were to only promote himself, why would NR be in every ad that is been telecasted ?
Thus, every fact occurring in the political arena within this presidential election seems to point in to only one direction and one only. It is that, MR is building an entire empire that would seemingly rely on him or his precedes as kings for us to be ruled. It is evident that the situation SL is currently undergoing has vast ethical issues compared to any democratic country. As we all are well aware, MR is challenging the essence of democracy, the decentralization of power, with centralizing the power among his family and virtually creating a kingdom. On the other hand, if SF were to be selected as the president, We would still be able to kick him out after 6 yrs if he's proven to be unworthy, which I would hardly believe.
If MR were to be the saint as they claims him to be and SF were to be the crook they alleged him to be, I would still vote for SF, because that would at least protect the remaining democratic nature of the country without completely jeopardizing it.
I would like to add another small fact about MR's diplomatic behavior regarding the SRILANKAN airlines. As you will be aware of, it is incurring huge losses recently, which is mainly due to it's poor management. Anyways i was not going to talk about that. It's past CEO, Peter Hill was kicked out from the country as we all are aware of, but how many of you know why MR made such a big fuzz about him to kick out him from the country? It is something that reflects the idiotic nature of R as well as his total unethical and non-democratic behavior as the president of a country. The CEO was kicked out because he did not surrender the presidents command to give him and his crew of 35 a single plane from London. As Airlines are a service industry, cancelling a single flight means a substantial loss financially as well as an irrecoverable loss to it's goodwill. Thus, Peter Hill has suggested some alternate methods of flight which has been strictly denied by MR, and among them he also suggested that, he can get a flight for MR and 18 of his crew while others will have to come on another flight. That was also been refused by MR who has been acting in such a frenzy not understanding the very nature of the service industries as well as prevailing conditions of it, to say that it was a time where every flight was over booked since it was the holiday season, are we to think that this man would really feel the way how economy works in SL?
It is with ultimate regret that I have to accept the fact that, he has done nothing, I am emphasizing the fact NOTHING within the last six months after the war was over to maximize the ripple of opportunities created by the termination of war. YES I accept the fact that the infrastructure has been developed, but that is normally been done by any government, and is not a substantial pull for the economy to move into a boom. For the last six months, no industry has been restated nor any service center. No new revenue centers were created and no new investments were made. Are we still to think that, this nature will not be prevailed for the next six years if MR were to become the president?
Further, the way he use the power he has for the election process is excruciatingly unethical and the worst I have ever witnessed. I mean, how can he ever claim the saint he says he is while wasting so much tax payers money on useless things like he does. MR has only not invited the beggars to temple tree to dine with him and to be granted something. Apart from that, every single one from any industry has been invited and treated, which reflects that he is virtually trying to buy off his votes in expense of our own money. Thinking about it, ultimately our money as well as our votes will be his as the way it goes. The people who have dined there are dining with their own money though a little do they know about it. I mean, yes I know politicians are all crooks, but I haven't seen something like this in even CBK's time. I accept the fact that every party who has had the power used it to gain undue benefits at elections previously, but this? what MR is doing is worse than ever imaginable by CBK or Premadasa or whoever the leaders there have been. And he still goes to the meetings and say I'm a saint and I haven't misused a cent from the tax payers money, how ironical is that?
Anyways, talking about MR's deals will take days and days to resolve with, so I'd like to give up on that and talk about SF now. The fact that my stand is with SF DOES not mean that I will approve everything he says and blindly follow his as some people follow MR. I think that is absolutely stupid and even for now, my stand can still be changed given substantial discoveries. But for the moment I support SF because he is the best alternative we have.
I know he is an amateur in politics, but he is not an amateur in leading. The knowledge you gain from one field can safely be applied for another field given that it is within the referrers grasp. Looking at SF's previous records, it is eminent that he has shown excellent leadership skills, in the battle field as well as excellent knowledge in strategical decision making which MR absolutely lacks and has no idea of whatsoever. In the light of the recent events, I can not predict the political behavior of SF, but I can predict that of MR, and I can say with a safe margin that SF will be way better than MR for sure. For an instance, let's say that Everyone is a crook, well even then, SF will have to take his time to be a crook, he has to get use to all the things and has to learn a lot to be a political crook, which will give him less time to do frauds than MR. I don't personally believe in that and please consider that, the above comment was entirely on an hypothetical situation. Further, if one thing we can be sure about SF is his discipline, which I doubt that even MR fans can not deny, because when you are in the army, you really can't survive the duration SF survived without been a very well disciplined officer. OK, let go of the final stages of his existence as Chief of Command where they say he committed frauds, he hasn't been accused before that and has been a perfectly disciplined officer. A discipline like that only comes from practice and well, practices die very hard. So personally, I would count on him to be very well disciplined as well.
I was expecting to compose a short reasoning but this seems to have gone too long, so I would like to conclude with the fact that I have stated at the start of this. I would still vote for SF even if he is the complete crook they say he is and MR was the saint they say he is in order to protect the remaining piece of democracy we have so that our sons will not have to endure a government where someone without the R suffix won't be able to do politics. I wouldn't vote SF only for the man he is but I would vote for him for THE CHANGE SL needs right now. Think carefully and use your vote wisely.
Regards!
