1. First thing, has to be understand the client's requirement. so having said that, i mean, Read "Project Description" VERY CAREFULLY. Then if you think you can do the project, then bid on that project.
recently I've seen that lot of clients are placing some secret words on their Project descriptions and checking if the bidders are reading there details.... you may be able to see sentences like.. "reply with this word .... in your PM (personal message) , so, thats important.. because always clients like people, who listens to them.
2. always keep ready some online portfolio to showcase.. or atleast some files ready on your hard drive to attach..
if you are a graphic designer.. then may be online portfolio (blogger, or your own site.. or may be you can keep your final artworks as a folder zipped)
if you are a web designer..then online working URL's must..
if you are a video creator, then youtube, vimeo channel with your videos

1. always be ready for any kind of communication type.. Skype chat, or Call, gtalk, yahoo or even your mobile ready
2. Keep your deadline.. this is must..must..must.. mokada dan indian freelancing karana ewun black list wela inne, un-realistic deadline, fraud, fake...anything you can imagine. so, normally, UK, US clients think Sri Lankas as indians, they can't see the different.. so if you want to prove you are different, you have to be different.. always keep your word..and deliver ontime..
and.. *** if you think, you can't meet the deadline..then tell your client before the deadline, that you can't meet the deadline..and need few more days..
3. when you talk with clients..eg: when you chatting.. try to be friendly..and normally.. people like to know that you are a responsible guys.. one way i found is.. to tell them that you are married.. (Married man is a responsible MAN )..
and if you are working with young clients.. always be friendly.. use friendly words.. and learn IM chat short codes.. like brb, ty, and smiles..
and.. don't ever forget to ask some personal things of them..and about their country....and SHOW them that you care about them, and you like his culture..and his country...and specially that you care about his project..
4. when you work with a client, lets say you are doing a web site for some client, and let them know, your other talents.... may be SEO, Graphic Design,Video.. content writing..etc..
