Doe the old PC have a network card ?
If both PCs have a network card and both have Windows XP just get a cross linked network cable and connect the 2 PCs.
In the PC with the USB modem, you can share the internet connection using the connection sharing wizard in windows.

Yes. The PC with the internet has to be on if the second PC wants to go online.

Yes the new PC has inbuilt network card. The prices of a new card and cable has already been given by someone else. Make sure you get a "Cross linked" network cable.
a straight cable will not work if you just plug in PC to PC.

    i have another suggestion.........

as long as you have network card with new pc, you just buy 2nd hand network card for the old pc. instead of cross wire you can go for switch or hub. then connect both pcs with RJ-45(standard network cable) cable. connect internet connection wire comes from modem to the switch or hub. this is the easy way. if not every time you want to share internet with old pc you got to on the new pc too.

if not best way is, go for router with few ports. then you can connect both pcs easily to router. still you got to buy a network card for old pc.

    any more suggestions...........?

This will work if he had a ADSL Router. What he has is a USB ADSL modem.

Also since when does switches/Hubs have controlling software to activate a modem ?

I think it's better to but a new ADSL router so U can split the ADSL connection (it is faster than getting the internet connection through another PC)

and it is safe coz ADSL routers got an in-built Firewall:)/B]
