The compartments, each costing 22 million rupees, will leave the Darley Harbour in China. This will fulfil a long-felt need of the Sri Lanka Railway Service. Not a single rail coach was newly added to service after 1982. As such, Minister Dulles Alahapperuma adopted measures to get down the coaches. It was his first cabinet memorandum. The coaches had been produced according to standards certified by Sri Lankan Railway Engineers. The supply agent is bound to pay 50 US Dollars per day, if any coach had to be removed from service during the warranty period due to any fault. This is the first time in Sri Lanka’s railway history that such a condition has been agreed upon. The Minister emphasised that it is a major victory for the government. The first 25 coaches are due to reach the Colombo Harbour on the 03rd of September. The balance 75 will be added to service within the next three months.
