New tsunami warnings as sea water rise of 0.8m detected

The US Pacific tsunami warning centre has issued a new Indian Ocean warning following fresh earthquakes off the coast of Indonesia.
Indonesia's geophysics agency says it has detected a rise in sea water level in west and north Aceh of up to 0.8m.

First earthquake, magnitude 8.6, occurred at 09.38 BST:

• Depth 20.6 miles;
• 271 miles SW of Banda Aceh, Indonesia;
• 598 miles W of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Second earthquake, magnitude 8.2, occurred at 11.43 BST:

• Depth: 6.2 miles;
• 282 miles SSW of Banda Aceh, Indonesia;
• 658 miles WSW of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

(Reuters) - A tsunami measuring 17 cm (6.7 inches) has been generated in the Indian Ocean and is headed for the Aceh province of Indonesia after a strong earthquake, a Pacific Tsunami Warning Center official said on Wednesday.
Earlier, an 8.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia, sending residents fleeing in fear.
Victor Sardina, a geophysicist on duty at the Hawaii-based center, said the total vertical measurement of the wave, according to monitoring gauges, was 35 cm (13.8 inches), making the height 17 cm (6.7 inches).
He did not provide a time estimate for landfall.
"It doesn't look like a major tsunami," Sardina said. "But we are still monitoring as tsunamis come in waves."

Parts of Indonesia's Sumatra island remain in danger from a tsunami following a series of powerful earthquakes off the Indonesian coast, but damage across the Indian Ocean basin is not expected, an official with the U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.
"So far all we've seen is on the order of about a meter or three feet or so, peak-to-peak," said Barry Hirshorn, a geophysicist at center, referring to waves measured by gauges mounted on buoys.
"And we've observed that on our closest gauge to the actual epicenter. The gauge is just off northern shore of Sumatra.
"We don't expect damage basin-wide, but there is danger nearby the source. So the tsunami danger is to the coastlines closest to the earthquake, which would be northern Sumatra."
