Generally Canon is better than Sony in terms of image quality. But little bit expensive too.
Nikon doesn’t make good Point and Shoot (compact) cameras, they are ONLY good at making SLR cameras. Therefore between Sony and Nikon, Sony is better; but if Canon is also an option, then I'd recommend Canon over Sony.

Ya its better if u can go for Canon. People will say Sony is better because of its brand image.Truth is Canon have a better history in camera field. More than that Canon have good quality cameras in most price ranges.

We cant say which brand is definitely better as it depends on the model. Most of the time Canon got better models, even in the price range you've given.

Best way is to google and find few sites with reviews.

BTW i bought a 'Canon A590 IS' for a friend sometime back for about Rs28k. But now those prices should be low, cos especially there are newer models and stuff.

i have a Sony one, even my previous one was a sony .. ive sued canon and from my point of view canon may have a slightly higher quality but cost wise and quality wise the sony one is better.. if price is not an issue then canon...

but keep in mind unless ur a high end user lookin for minute details in the best possible manner.. sony is better...

cos end of the day if ur that into quality u should buy an SLR camera anyways!

As I said before Nikon does NOT make good compact cameras. I agree they make very good SLR cameras like the Nikon D series, but that’s all. Their P&S models are crap, at least cameras that came out a while ago with sensors having less than 10MP. I know because I have read so many camera reviews. Those who say Nikon is good have never read a single review I suppose. Remember this guy is NOT asking about SLR cameras !!!

One more thing, you cant generally say one specific brand is better than the other, it all comes down to the specific camera model. As buddhikamh said, read some professional reviews before you buy. He has given some good review sites. Go through them.

Don’t rely a lot on what people here say. Unless a professional photographer comments. Because most people are biased towards the camera brand they own. I normally read lot of professional reviews before buying. And I suggest you do the same.

I think Nikon is the best.......... i have used a compact camera of that model and it was superb in image quality, sharpness and everything
