The all-new 2026 Nissan Leaf adopts a crossover shape

The 2026 Nissan Leaf electric car undergoes a significant transformation. No longer a hatchback, the new Leaf wisely adopts a crossover shape, a change that aligns with current market trends. Under the new body is an all-new platform, new battery, and new motor technology. As an EV that started out so far ahead of the game 15 years ago, some might say an all-new, fully-competitive Nissan Leaf is overdue.
2026 Nissan Leaf: Efficient Drivetrain
The standard drivetrain for the 2026 Leaf consists of a 75-kWh lithium-ion battery paired with a 214-horsepower, 262 lb-ft of torque electric motor. This configuration is expected to provide a range of up to 303 miles on a single charge in the S+ trim. Stepping up the SV+ adds features like heated seats, the Google built-in software, and those larger 14.3-inch screens, but range drops to 288 miles. The Platinum+ trim moves from 18 to 19-inch wheels, adds the panoramic roof and Bose audio system, and a powered liftgate, while range drops to 259 miles.

The new drivetrain integrates major components to reduce weight and has a new thermal management system to more efficiently capture heat to keep battery at an optimal operating temperature. Two charging ports allow drivers to utilize the Tesla supercharger network or Level 2 charging without an adapter. Nissan has also announced a second, more affordable drivetrain option will be available at a later date. This version will have a smaller 52-kWh lithium-ion battery and a 174-horsepower motor. The pricing and range for this version has not yet been announced.

Two steering settings, three acceleration settings, and four adjustable regenerative braking settings (via steering wheel paddles) give the Nissan Leaf a wide range of driving characteristics. An all-new multi-link suspension and upgraded rack for the electronic power steering are meant to improve driving dynamics, and the 2026 Leaf does offer a refined ride and confident handling, through with the 19-inch wheels on the Platinum+ trim ride quality may border on stiff for some consumers.

2026 Nissan Leaf: New “Crossover” Shape
The most striking change for the 2026 Nissan Leaf is its exterior. The new crossover design maintains its functionality while giving it a more aerodynamic shape. The previous Leaf’s already sleek 0.29 coefficient of drag has been further improved to 0.26. This is achieved through a number of design elements, including motorized, flush front door handles that retract into the bodywork for a smooth profile, and active grill shutters.

At the front, the Leaf features a black grille, with an optional illuminated Nissan emblem. The lighting has been redesigned with stacked rectangular elements. There is also an available full-width running lamp that connects the headlights, a move we’ve seen on many models across the EV segment in recents years. Our back, a spoiler on the liftgate helps with airflow, and concealed rear door handles give the side profile a cleaner look. Nissan has also incorporated what it calls "2-3" (which is what “Nissan” means in Japanese) iconography into the headlights, tail lamps, and wheels.

2026 Nissan Leaf: Premium Interior Design
Inside, the 2026 Nissan Leaf features new front seats that use Nissan’s “zero gravity” philosophy to deliver improved comfort. The center console has been slimmed down, and a start button on the dash helps this EV feel familiar to gasoline drivers. Drivers looking to customize the interior ambiance can use the optional 64-color ambient lighting system. A panoramic roof with electrochomic technology is also available, allowing for either bright, airy cabin or a more shaded, private experience.experience.
Cargo space starts at 20 cubic feet and grows to 55.5 cu ft with the rear seat folded down

Practicality is also a key aspect of the new interior. There’s 20 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, and with the rear seats folded down the Leaf offers up to 55.5 cubic feet of cargo space. An optional Divide-N-Hide organizer is also available for more flexible use of the cargo area.

All 2026 Nissan Leafs are equipped with dual 12.3-inch screens, one for the digital instrument cluster and one for the central infotainment display. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard, as are two front USB Type C ports for charging phones or other devices. Optional features include an infotainment system with Google built-in, which integrates Google Maps, Google Assistant, and the Google Play Store directly into the vehicle’s system. The dual 12.3-inch screens can also be upgraded to larger dual 14.3-inch screens, which can stream TV shows whien the Leaf is parked.
