INTERPRETING SIGNING ERROR MESSAGESIN S60 v3

    1. Message:Certificate error,Contact the application supplier.

Hint:You may have tried installing unsigned application. Note that signing is mandatory S60 3rd Edition. You can use self-signed certificate or developer certificate from Symbian Signed to sign your application.

    2. Message:Unable to install. Constrained by the certificate.

Hint:This message pops up when you attempt to install developer certificate in the unsupported device. The developer certificate fromSymbian Signed can only be used in a limited number of devices. Remember that you have to send your IMEIs to Symbian Signed when requesting certificate. You cannot use the certificate in other devices that is not in your IMEIs list.

    3. Message:Required application access not granted.

Hint:Check that your certificate can be used to sign all capabilities needed by your application. For example, if you use self signed certificate, you can only sign basic set capabilities, i.e. NetworkServices, ReadUserData, WriteUserData, LocalServices andUserEnvironment. If your application requires one of the extended capabilities, for example SwEvent, you cannot sign it with self-signed certificate. In this case, apply for developer certificates from Symbian Signed.

    4. Message:Unable to install a protected application from an untrusted supplier.

Hint:If you use self-signed certificate, make sure that your application uses unprotected UID, i.e. 0xA0000000 - 0xAFFFFFFF. If you use protected UID (0x20000000 - 0x2FFFFFFF) or legacy UID (0x10000000 - 0x1FFFFFFF), you will get this message.

    5. Message:Unable to install.

Hint:This message may come up when your installation file (.sis/.sisx) copies files to other application's private folder, i.e. \private\uid. Note that Symbian 9 introduces data caging concept, it means you don't have access to other application's private folder.

    6. Message:Expired Certificate
    Hint this...
Set the phone date back by 7-8months..
    7. Message:Update error
Hint:Uninstall any previous version of the application, then switch on/off the phone and install again

SORRY BROTHER IT TOOK ME 5 MIN TO MAKE SCREEN SHOTS AND UPLOAD IT!!!

    Hi Amila_mp
First of all this hack wont work on new firmwares [os 9.3,fp2 phones].But it should work with all currently hackable firmwares. All other similar hacks are already present on dotsis but the point of my post is to provide you the fastest hack available for symbian OS. Just download the attached single file hacking kit by binpda and your phone is ready to be hacked in 2 mins. Even all the installserver.exe for all the phones are included in this single file. So no more moving the files here and there with xplore. No more certificate errors, no more expired certificates. Just install any file even if it is unsigned or says expired certificate.. During installation choose the install server correctly according to your phone.. As u see in the sceenshot, u have to choose 3 files.
    *Binpda Security Manager
    *Installserver.exe [according to ur fone]
*capsoff driver [according to ur fone]

Note: This hack is not for new FP2 devices like N96,N79,N85 or new firmwares like N95 v31 or N82 v21

The Nokia 5800's call settings menu, which lets you adjust all kinds of stuff to do with making and receiving phone calls.

Making and receiving phone calls on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

The 5800 is of course above all a telephone. Here are a few hints and tips on how to make calls as quickly and easily as possible:

How to call someone who you've called recently

On the main standby screen, press the phone's green button. This will bring up a list of recently dialled numbers. Click once on the number you want to use and then select the phone icon (or the green button if you prefer).

How to call someone who has recently called you

On the main standby screen, press the phone's green button. When the list of recent outgoing calls appears, click on the tab at the top of the screen with an arrow pointing downwards, and you will see a list of recently received calls. Click once on the number you wish to call back, then select the phone icon.

How to call back a missed call

If you've just missed a call or calls, you can see a list of recent missed calls by just touching the "missed call(s)" message which appears on the phone's standby screen.

If you missed the call some time ago and there's no message on the standby screen, try pressing the phone's green button. When the list of recent outgoing calls appears, click on the tab at the top of the screen with a curved arrow pointing upwards. You should now see a list of missed calls. Click once on the number you wish to call back, then select the phone icon.

The quickest way to call one of your favourite contacts

If a contact is one of the four preset favourites on the phone's standby screen, you can call them in two clicks:

    1. From the main standby screen, select the photo icon of the contact you want to call.

    2. A box appears linked to their photo, select the phone icon to call them.

The quickest way to call one of your non-favourite contacts

    1. From the main standby screen, select the "Contacts" icon (the address book with a person on the cover).

    2. Click once on the person you want to call.

    3. Click on the phone button.

How to call a normal number

On the phone's main standby screen, press the keypad icon at the bottom of the screen, then dial just like on a real phone keypad. Press the phone icon to call the entered number.

How to access your voicemail / answerphone

If your phone network operator has a voicemail (aka answerphone) service, you can check it on the 5800 using the following method:

    1. On the main standby screen, select the keypad icon.

    2. On the keypad, hold down the "1" key (the one with the tape logo in it).

    3. The phone should now dial your voicemail number. If the number isn't already stored in the phone it will ask you for it. Contact your phone network operator if you don't know your voicemail number.

How to divert calls (also known as forwarding calls)

    1. On the phone's main standby screen, press the white menu button.

    2. Select "Settings".

    3. Select "Calling".

    4. Select "Call Divert", then "Voice Calls".

    5. Choose whichever diversion option you want to use, and set a number to divert to if necessary. (Check with your network operator if you want to divert to a voicemail number, they should be able to tell you what your voicemail number is.)

    6. If you want to check the status of your call diversion, choose "Options" and then "Check Status".

How to see how long a call lasted afterwards

    1. On the phone's main standby screen, press the white menu button.

    2. Select "Settings".

    3. Select "Calling".

    4. Select "Call".

    5. Select "Summary After Call" and switch it to "Yes". It will now tell you how long each call lasted as soon as it finishes.

How to see how long a call is lasting during the call

Do the above process but set "Show Call Duration" to "Yes".

Can I use the 5800 as a speakerphone?

Yes, just select the on-screen speaker button during a call.

Here's how to choose your phone's tones, alerts, vibration etc:

    1. On the main standby screen, press the white menu button.

    2. Select "Settings".

    3. Select "Personal".

    4. Select "Profiles".

    5. Double-click on the profile you normally use (this will usually be "General").

    6. Select "Personalise".

    7. Click on whatever you want to alter (for example "Ringing Tone" to change the call ringtone). Note that there are different ringtones for ordinary and video calls, and different settings for keypads and touchscreens.

    8. When you've finished altering the settings, press the red button to go back to the main standby screen.

To switch to a different profile, tap the standby screen's date and choose the profile you want.

How to choose a ringtone from the music player

You can also select a ringtone from the 5800's music player, just go to the track you want to use and select "Options". One of the options will be "Use Tone", giving you the choice of using it as the ringtone for the current profile, or as the tone for a specific person.

    ************************************************** ********

How to make video calls on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

The 5800 has a built-in secondary camera in the top right corner of the front of the phone, which is mainly intended for videophone calls. You can make and receive video calls very easily, in fact they're almost as easy as ordinary calls.

Video calls will only work if you're in a 3G or 3.5G network, so make sure you can see the 3G or 3.5G logo under the call signal bar in the top left corner of the screen before attempting to make a video call.

Note that video calls usually cost more than ordinary phone calls. If you're unsure how much they cost, ask your phone network operator about their video call charges.

How to make a video call to people in Contacts (the address book)

    1. From the main standby screen, select the Contacts icon (the person icon).

    2. Double-click on the person you want to call.

    3. Select "Options".

    4. Select "Call" and then "Video Call".

How to make a video call to people who aren't in Contacts

    1. From the main standby screen, select the Dialler icon (the keypad icon).

    2. Enter the number you wish to call.

    3. Select "Options".

    4. Select "Call" and then "Video Call".

How to activate your video automatically when receiving video calls

If you receive a video call, for privacy reasons the phone will ask you if you want to switch on your camera.

However, if you prefer you can set it to automatically switch on your camera when receiving video calls:

    1. From the main standby screen, press the white menu button.

    2. Select "Settings".

    3. Select "Calling".

    4. Select "Call".

    5. Select "Own Video In Received Call", and set it to "Show Automatically".

    6. Press the red button to get back to the standby screen.

SMS and MMS text messaging hints for the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

SMS stands for Short Message Service, but is more commonly known simply as text messaging or texting. The 5800 supports both normal texts (aka SMS) and multimedia messages (aka MMS), which can include photos, sounds, video clips and other attachments.

You can access your received messages through the "Messaging" icon on the main menu screen, which also lets you see an archive of the last 20 sent messages, drafts and other features.

Messaging is pretty easy to use and very similar to text message systems on other phones, so we're going to concentrate on some general hints and tips rather than explaining everything in detail.

To start off with though, here's the message editing screen:

    dosas2.jpg

If the person you want to text is one of your favourites on the standby screen:

    1. On the main standby screen, select the person's image.

    2. Select the envelope icon.

    3. Select the body of the text to write the message.

    4. When you've finished writing the message, select the envelope icon to send it.

If the person you want to text is in your phone's Contacts (address book) but isn't one of the favourites on the standby screen:

    1. On the main standby screen, select the Contacts icon (the icon of a person).

    2. Click once on the name you want to send a text to.

    3. Select the envelope icon at the bottom of the screen.

    4. Select the body of the text to write the message.

    5. When you've finished writing the message, select the envelope icon to send it.

If the number you want to text isn't a favourite and isn't in Contacts:

    1. On the main standby screen, select the Dialler icon (the icon of a keypad).

    2. Enter the number to which you want to send the text.

    3. Select "Options", then "Send Message".

    4. Select the body of the text to write the message.

    5. When you've finished writing the message, select the envelope icon to send it.

How to tell if someone has received your message

There's a very useful feature of most phone networks called a delivery report, which tells you when one of your text messages has arrived. It's very easy to switch this feature on, and it can be very useful.

    1. From the main standby screen, press the white menu button.

    2. Select "Messaging".

    3. Select "Options".

    4. Select "Settings".

    5. Select "Text Message".

    6. Select "Receive Report" and make sure it says "Yes".

    7. Press the red button to get back to the standby screen.

The phone will now report when a message has been received by its recipient. A report doesn't mean they've read it, but it does mean that it has arrived on their phone.

These reports should be free of charge on most phone networks, but if you're unsure contact your phone network operator and ask if they charge for such reports.

How to send the same message to lots of people at once

While editing the message, just select the "Add Recipient" button (the person next to a + sign) more than once.

Note that if you send a single message to several people, you will be charged for several text messages.

How to create and send a multimedia message (MMS)

Just write the text message as normal, but click on the paperclip icon to attach a multimedia file from your phone. A menu will appear which will let you choose which file to attach, and it will include options for creating new files specially for the message.

Important Note: Most phone networks charge more for sending a multimedia message than a normal text message. If you're unsure what your message charges are, contact your phone network operator to find out.

How to use the FM radio (and RDS) on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic ?

    210850d1264344039-you-new-5800-xm-must-read-nokia5800musicfolder.jpg
    210851d1264344046-you-new-5800-xm-must-read-nokia5800radio.jpg

The 5800 comes with a built-in FM radio, which also includes support for RDS and AF data transmissions.

Here's how to use the FM radio:

    1. Plug some headphones into the 5800. FM radio requires some kind of aerial, and in a mobile device this is almost always the headphones. You can use any brand of headphones with the 5800, as long as it has a standard 3.5mm jack on it.

    2. From the main standby screen, press the white menu button.

    3. Select "Music".

    4. Select "Radio".

    5. If this is the first time you've used the phone's radio, it may automatically ask if you want to scan for stations. Say yes.

    6. If it doesn't ask you to scan for stations, you'll have to start the process manually. Do this by selecting "Options", then "Tune Stations", then select the "Scan Stations" button (the four grey curved lines in the middle).

    7. After you've scanned for stations, select "Yes" to save them, and select "Yes" to replace any existing ones.

    8. Once the stations are saved, go through them one by one using the "Next Station" button (the arrows pointing right) and allow the radio's RDS system to pick up each station's name. Once it has picked up the name, it will automatically save it for next time you use the radio.

Useful tip for using radio while away from home: If you're travelling outside your local area, you can repeat the above process to find out what stations are available in your current location.

Here's a general guide to using the radio interface:

    210852d1264344086-you-new-5800-xm-must-read-nokia5800radioannotated.jpg

I did the scan but there are some stations missing from the list

If you're in an area where FM radio signals can be weak, the radio's scanning process may miss some stations out. The easiest way to fix this is to get to an area where radio signals can travel more freely (for example outside or near a window) and then repeat the scanning process above all over again.

How do I change the radio's volume?

Touch the middle of the screen and a volume slider will appear, just slide it up or down to change the volume:

    210853d1264344170-you-new-5800-xm-must-read-nokia5800radiocomplete.jpg

Can I listen to the radio through the phone's loudspeakers?

Yes, you can listen to the radio through the speakers, but you must still have the headphones plugged in to act as the phone's FM aerial.

To switch speakers on while listening to the radio:

    1. Activate the radio application and tune it to the station you want.

    2. Select "Options".

    3. Select "Activate Loudspeaker".

    4. To go back to headphones, select "Options" and then "Deactivate Loudspeaker".

What is RDS? Does it cost anything to use?

RDS (Radio Data System) is totally 100% free for everyone. There are absolutely no costs for using RDS.

RDS is a special system that allows radio stations to include text with their usual audio broadcasts. This text can be picked up by any RDS-equipped device, such as the Nokia 5800. The RDS system has been used throughout Europe and South America since the 1990s, and is most common in car radios, but it is increasingly becoming available in other electronic devices such as mobile phones. There's also a nearly-identical system in North America called RBDS (Radio Broadcast Data System) which does exactly the same thing.

Most stations just use RDS to broadcast their name, but some may also broadcast a second stream of scrolling text which contains a brief news item or advertisement. This will appear on the 5800 below the station name.

Some stations use RDS incorrectly, in which case you'll see the name and the second text stream the wrong way round, or other similar mistakes.

    What does AF mean?

AF on radios stands for Alternative Frequencies, and is a part of RDS. The idea is for a station to broadcast other frequencies on which the station can also be picked up. Radios equipped with AF support will automatically switch to the station's alternative frequency when the current frequency starts to break up.

To enable AF, select "Options", then "Alternative Frequencies", then "Auto Scan On". To disable AF, choose "Auto Scan Off" instead.

How do I name stations manually?

If you can't get station names to appear automatically through RDS, or if RDS contains a mistake, you can name stations by hand:

    1. Make sure you've scanned and saved your available stations using the method earlier in this article.

    2. While using the radio application, select "Options".

    3. Select "Stations".

    4. Select the station you want to name or rename.

    5. Select "Options".

    6. Select "Rename".

    7. Enter the new name and select "OK".

How do I seek stations manually?

There's no real point in tuning manually, the automatic scan described at the beginning of this article does everything that a manual scan does and saves you the bother.

However, if you're in a situation where a manual scan is required, here's how to do it:

    1. Make sure you've got headphones plugged in and activate the radio application.

    2. Select "Options".

    3. Select "Tune Stations".

    4. Press the up arrow to scan upwards, press the down arrow to scan downwards.

    5. To go back to the normal radio interface, select "Back".

What happened to Nokia's radio station database?

Some earlier Nokia phones had an FM station database system where you could download FM station details for locations around the world through the phone's internet connection. However, this was expensive to use for some people (because it required an internet connection through the phone network), it was useless in areas without a phone signal, and it would probably have been a lot of trouble for Nokia to maintain as it would require constant updating.

It's cheaper and easier for everyone to just use the existing radio data service, RDS, which provides name data to everyone at no extra charge.

How to transfer files by USB cable between the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and a Windows, Linux or Macintosh computer.

    Attachment 210856

There are lots of useful things you can do on your 5800 by connecting it to a computer using its USB cable. For example you can transfer applications and games onto the phone, or transfer photos and videos off the phone.

Whatever you want to transfer, here's how to connect the 5800 to most kinds of computer (including Windows, Linux and Macintosh machines) using the microUSB cable that comes with it:

    1. Make sure your computer and phone are both switched on. Also make sure your 5800 has a memory card in its slot.

    2. Plug the small end of the microUSB cable into the phone's USB socket, which is under a plastic flap in the top left corner. (If you're wondering which way up it goes in, the plug's USB logo should be facing upwards.)

    3. Plug the larger end of the microUSB cable into a USB port on your computer. It doesn't really matter which one you use, they should all work just as well.

    4. On your 5800 it should ask which mode you wish to use. Choose "Mass Storage". A small trident-like icon should appear in the top right corner of the phone's screen indicating it's connected by USB cable.

    5. On Windows Vista computers a window called "AutoPlay" may appear, in which case select "Open Folder To View Files" and a window will appear showing the contents of the 5800's memory card. On other operating systems you may see different messages, or you may see no messages at all. Whatever system you use, the 5800's memory card should show up as "Removable Disk D:", and it will be accessible from your computer's file manager.

    6. To put files onto the phone's memory card, just drag them into the memory card's window (which is probably called "Removable Disk D:"). To take files off the memory card, just drag them onto your computer's desktop, or into a folder on its desktop.

    7. When you've finished transferring files, DO NOT DISCONNECT THE CABLE YET! First, you have to make it safe to disconnect the cable. The method for doing this varies depending on whether you're using Windows, Mac or Linux, but they generally involve an option that says "Remove Hardware Safely", "Disconnect Safely", "Unmount Volume" or other similar phrases. On Windows you can do this by clicking on a small icon in the bottom left corner of the screen that appears when the phone is connected (it may look like a phone with a green tickmark, or it may look like something else). Clicking will bring up an option that says "Safely Remove USB Mass Storage Device", click on this option and then "OK". On other computers you may need to find the phone listed as "Removable Drive" in the file manager, and choose the safe removal option from there. You may also see the phone appear as a memory card icon, as it's the phone's memory card that's being accessed.

    8. After you have made the device safe to remove, you can unplug the cable at both ends.

And that's it. If you want to transfer more stuff, just repeat the above process, and always remember to make the phone safe to disconnect before unplugging.

    Attachment 210857Attachment 210858

Why do I have to select "Remove Hardware Safely" before unplugging the cable?

This precaution applies to all memory cards, memory sticks, external drives, music players, mobile phones etc that are connected to computers by USB cable in "mass storage" or "data transfer"mode. They should ONLY be unplugged after they have been made safe to unplug.

It's a safety precaution that helps to prevent damage to the phone's memory card. If the cable is unplugged while the computer is still accessing it there's a chance it may cause permanent damage to the card.

If you unplug without making things safe, don't worry, you probably won't have any problems, but try to remember next time.

Why do some operating systems say "Unmount Volume"? What the heck does that mean?

They're using nerdy anorak language. What they really mean is "Remove Safely".

Does the 5800 use a special kind of USB cable? Can I use a similar cable from another device?

Like many recent phones the 5800 uses a microUSB cable, which means it has a normal USB plug at one end and a teeny-tiny flat plug at the other. You can use any microUSB cable with the 5800, it doesn't really matter who manufactured it or where you got it from.

One thing to be careful about though, microUSB isn't the same thing as miniUSB. MiniUSB cables have a normal USB plug at one end, but a miniUSB plug is a bit larger than a microUSB plug, and they won't fit into each other's sockets.

The reason there are two standards is that MicroUSB is meant to gradually replace miniUSB over time. MicroUSB plugs use much thinner sockets, so switching to microUSB lets manufacturers make devices smaller. However, the transition between miniUSB and microUSB looks like being a long one, so for the next few years at least you'll see both kinds of cable being used.

    What about Bluetooth file transfers?

The 5800 can also transfer files by wireless Bluetooth, but that's not covered by this tutorial. Bluetooth in general is more convenient in that it requires no cable, but it has many disadvantages such as being much slower than USB cables, and many computers don't have Bluetooth compatibility. Using Bluetooth also requires authorisation of connections, which can be a bit complicated.

File transfer by USB cable is the quickest, easiest and most secure way to transfer files between a computer and 5800.

How to use memory cards on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic ?

    Attachment 210859

Does the Nokia 5800 come with a memory card?

Yes, most 5800s are sold with an 8 gigabyte card already placed in the slot, and preloaded with some music tracks and videos. The card size may vary depending on where you buy it, but there should be some kind of card included with the phone.

You can replace the card that comes with the phone if you want to.

Of course, if you buy the phone second hand you may not get a card with it at all.

How do I access what's on the card?

Most of the phone's applications such as Gallery and Music Player automatically detect what's on the card.

However, if you want direct access to browse the card's files and folders, you can use the File Manager application:

    1. On the phone's standby screen press the white menu button.

    2. Select "Applications".

    3. Select "File Manager".

    4. Select "E: Memory Card". This will show the contents of the memory card in a similar manner to the file manager on most computers.

You can view or run a file by clicking on it, which should automatically launch the appropriate application. For example clicking on an image file will display the image in the Gallery, while clicking on an audio file will start playing it in the Music Player.

You can also install applications and games using File Manager. Just click on the app or game file (they usually end in .SIS or .SISX) and it will automatically start the installation process.

The File Manager contains all the usual options for moving files, deleting them, renaming them etc in its Options menu. Be careful when deleting stuff though, as it will be gone forever if you don't have a backup.

Which type of memory cards can I use with the 5800?

The 5800 has a microSDHC card slot, so it can use both microSD and microSDHC memory cards.

What capacity cards can I use on the 5800?

Officially the 5800 can use cards up to 16 gigabytes in size, but unofficially you may be able to use even higher capacity cards (though Nokia won't guarantee that larger cards work).

Which speed cards can I use on the 5800?

The card slot should work with all current classes of memory card. The higher the class, the faster the speed. Higher speed cards are particularly important if you want to record high quality video with your 5800, as slower cards will produce stuttery video files.

Where is the card slot and how do I change cards?

You can find the 5800's memory card slot on the left of the phone, it's behind the lower door in the middle (the upper door is the SIM card slot). Most 5800s are sold with an 8 gigabyte card already placed in the slot.

If you take the card out while the phone is still using it, it can cause damage to the card. Because of this, the safest way to change cards is to just switch the phone off using the power button at the top.

The card slot is a "hot-swap" one, which means you can also change cards while the phone is switched on, but first you will need to press the power button briefly and select the "Remove Memory Card" option before taking the card out. This option shuts down all the applications which are using the card, so that it isn't damaged when you take it out.

Aergh! It's really difficult to take the card out! It's really difficult to put the card in!

You should be able to remove the card by pressing it in a short distance, then letting it pop out towards you. Once it's popped out you should be able to pull it the rest of the distance out with your fingernails.

However, if this last step is too difficult, try using a pair of tweezers/pincers to pull the card out.

You can put the card back in by pressing it in and waiting for it to click into place.

If you're having trouble putting a card in, remember that the brand name of the card should face upwards (i.e. be on the same side of the phone as the screen).

Where should I buy memory cards? Do I have to buy Nokia-brand memory cards?

You can use any brand of microSDHC or microSD card with the 5800. You do not have to use Nokia-brand, other brands work fine (and the other brands are usually a lot cheaper too).

Try to make sure you buy the card in a reputable electronics shop. There are a lot of counterfeit cards floating around the internet, some of which look like they're made by a famous brand but are actually made by someone else. Counterfeit cards may suddenly stop working, and if that happens you could lose all the data you stored on them such as photos, videos, music etc.

How do I format a memory card?

It's best to format phone memory cards in the actual phone, to make sure they're formatted in a way that works properly with the phone.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Remember that formatting a card wipes all the data from it, so be careful!

To format a memory card on the 5800:

    1. On the standby screen, press the white menu button.

    2. Select "Applications".

    3. Select "File Manager".

    4. Double-click on "E: Memory Card".

    5. Select "Options".

    6. Select "Memory Card Options" and then "Format".

You can use a similar procedure for renaming cards too, but choose "Name" instead of "Format".

How long do memory cards last?

In general, card manufacturers guarantee that memory cards last 5 or even 10 years. However the real use time depends on how much you use the card, especially how often you fill it up and delete stuff to free space. If you never fill the card up and never delete stuff either, the card may last longer than its guaranteed time. If you fill it up a lot and delete stuff a lot, it may last shorter than its guaranteed time.

It's probably a good idea to make sure you have a copy of your card's data somewhere else (for example on your computer), in case the card breaks, or in case it gets lost or stolen. You can learn to easily transfer files back and forth between your memory card and computer by reading our USB data transfer tutorial.

What about SD and miniSD? Can I use them on the 5800?

No, they're physically too large to fit into the 5800's card slot.

Can I use microSD and microSDHC cards in miniSD and SD card slots?

Yes, you can use microSD and microSDHC cards in miniSD and SD card slots with the appropriate adaptors. You can see examples of microSD-miniSD and microSD-SD adaptors below.

These adaptors are very cheap because they're basically just bits of plastic, and they usually come free with the memory card itself.

    Attachment 210860

Can I use the phone's card in other phones? Can I use it in non-phone devices such as cameras, music players and computers?

You can use microSD and microSDHC cards in any device with a compatible slot. Do not format the card in another device though, as it may stop working in your phone.

What's the difference between microSD cards and microSDHC cards?

They look physically identical, but the microSDHC cards can store much more data. MicroSD cards can only go up to 4 gigabytes in size, but microSDHC cards can go up to 32 gigabytes or even larger.

The 5800 can use both types of card, so you don't need to worry which one you buy. However, remember that the official capacity limit is 16 gigabytes, so you're taking a risk if you use larger cards.

Many people refer to both card types as "microSD", perhaps because that format came first.

I changed memory cards and my wallpaper disappeared!

If you remove a card, you cannot access data on it. If you used an image file from a memory card as your phone wallpaper, it will disappear when you remove the card.

You can get the wallpaper back by putting the card back in the phone. If you want to keep the wallpaper and change the card, try transferring the wallpaper's image file onto the phone's internal memory using the File Manager application mentioned above.

Why are these cards so small?

Because people keep buying smaller and thinner phones, so manufacturers have to come up with ways to reduce the phone's size. Making the card smaller also makes the card slot smaller, which reduces the overall size of the phone.

MicroSD is the industry standard for phone memory cards now, practically all phone makers use it, so there's no way to avoid it.

How to back up your data and settings on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic ?

    210861d1264345940-you-new-5800-xm-must-read-nokia5800backup.jpg

The 5800 is basically a pocket-sized computer, and like all computers it's a good idea to back up your data and settings in case something goes wrong.

You can create a backup on the 5800's memory card, and you can also create a backup on a Windows PC using Nokia PC Suite.

How to create a backup on the phone itself

    1. From the phone's main standby screen press the white menu button.

    2. Select "Applications".

    3. Select "File Manager".

    4. Select "Backup".

    5. Select "Options", then "Back Up Now".

    6. Select "Yes" (it will automatically replace any previous backup).

The backup will be stored on the memory card currently in the phone's memory card slot. If you want to store your backup physically separately from your phone, you can take the card with the backup on it out and put it somewhere safe.

To restore the latest backup onto your phone, repeat the process above but choose "Restore" instead of "Back Up Now".

How to create a backup on your computer using PC Suite

If you have a computer running Microsoft Windows, you can install Nokia PC Suite, which is a free collection of programs designed to work with Nokia mobile phones. You can download PC Suite from its official website by clicking here.

Connect the 5800 to your computer with its microUSB cable, selecting the phone's "PC Suite" mode when you connect. Start up PC Suite and select the "Backup" option (which should be an icon that looks like a safe). Follow the on-screen instructions to create the backup.

How to switch off Automatic Screen Rotation on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.

Like many smartphones nowadays, the 5800 has a feature called Automatic Screen Rotation which automatically puts it into horizontal mode when it's held horizontally, and vertical mode when it's held vertically.

However, some people prefer to have their phone permanently in one mode, in which case they need to switch ASR off.

Here's how to do that on the 5800:

    214740d1267762024-you-new-5800-xm-must-read-101.jpg
    214741d1267762026-you-new-5800-xm-must-read-.jpg

    1. On the main standby screen, press the white menu button.

    2. Select "Settings".

    3. Select "Phone".

    4. Select "Sensor Settings".

    5. Select "Turning Control".

    6. Untick the box marked "Auto-rotate Display".

    7. Select "OK", then press the red button to get back to the standby screen.

The phone will then stay permanently in vertical mode, except in applications where horizontal mode is available manually through the options menu.

To switch Automatic Screen Rotation back on, do the steps above but tick the box marked "Auto-rotate Display".

How to get rid of the flashing envelope icon on the Nokia 5800.

If you've just put your SIM card in your Nokia 5800, you may have noticed a flashing envelope icon at the top of the screen.

This icon indicates that the SIM card's own text message storage is full. This doesn't actually cause problems on the 5800 because it stores its messages in the phone's own memory, but the envelope can look a bit annoying.

To get rid of the flashing envelope:

    1. On the standby screen press the white menu button.

    2. Select "Messaging"

    3. Select "Options"

    4. Select "SIM Messages"

    5. Delete some or all of the messages from the SIM messages folder using the Options menu.

This should make the flashing envelope go away. You only have to do this once because when the SIM card is emptied it won't fill any more, as the 5800 does not store messages on SIM cards.

But why does the envelope appear in the first place?

Some older and simpler phone models do not store SMS text messages on the phone itself, they use the SIM card's memory instead. However, SIM card memory is very limited and gets full quite quickly. If a phone relies on the SIM card for storage and the SIM card is full, then it can no longer receive messages.

The 5800 does NOT use SIM cards for message storage, so it doesn't actually make any practical difference whether the SIM card is full or not. However, the flashing envelope icon will still appear if the SIM card is full just to let you know about it.

The Samsung Omnia HD and the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic are both powered by Symbian S60 5th Edition

What does "Symbian" mean? What is "S60"?

Is DoTSIS an official site owned by Symbian or Nokia?

No, we are 100% unofficial and independent and we're free to SAY & SHARE whatever we want about Symbian, Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and everyone else involved with the Symbian world.

We've historically been a fairly technical site, but we're doing these tutorials to try and help people, people new to the Symbian world get the most out of their Symbian-based phones. A lot of new people are discovering Symbian through the Nokia 5800, so we've started our beginners' tutorial series by concentrating on that model.

For those of you who are wondering what these terms mean, here's a brief explanation:

All modern computing devices, big or small, require an Operating System, also known as an OS. The OS contains all the basic instructions that the computer needs in order to do things.

The most widely-used OS on home computers is Microsoft Windows. The most widely-used OS on smartphones is Symbian.

Symbian is the operating system used on the Nokia 5800, on all of Nokia's smartphones, and on smartphones from many other manufacturers too such as Samsung, Sony Ericsson and LG.

S60, also known as Series 60, is a software platform and interface that sits on top of Symbian.

In the past there were other flavours of Symbian such as Symbian UIQ, Symbian Series 80 and Symbian Series 90. However, nowadays all Symbian phone manufacturers use Symbian S60. Because all Symbian phones now use S60, the two terms are often used interchangeably.

Which version of Symbian and S60 does the Nokia 5800 use?

The 5800 runs Symbian version 9.4 and S60 5th Edition. These are the very latest versions, and the 5800 is the first phone to run them.

S60 5th Edition is sometimes written as S60v5.

What about the S60 web browser? What's that?

It's the web browser that is built into phones running Symbian S60.

Do all of Nokia's phones run Symbian?

No. Only their advanced phone models (the smartphones) run Symbian. The ordinary cheaper models run a much simpler operating system called ISA. ISA-based phones use an interface called Series 40, and they're often referred to as "Series 40 phones".

For various historical reasons some people mistakenly think Series 40 is something to do with Symbian, but it isn't.

Are all Symbian phones made by Nokia?

No. Nokia is the biggest maker of Symbian phones, but they're not the only maker. Other companies such as Samsung, Sony Ericsson, LG and others also manufacture Symbian devices.

If Symbian is so widely-used, why have I never heard of it?

Symbian is in over 250 million devices and about half of all smartphones use it as their operating system. It's by far the most used OS on portable computing devices.

The reason you probably haven't heard of it is because it's not really a consumer brand. Manufacturers who use it in their smartphones tend not to mention it on the phone's box or on the start-up screen, so most Symbian users aren't aware that they ARE Symbian users! :-)

However that may change soon as the old Symbian company has been replaced by the Symbian Foundation, an organisation dedicated to encouraging Symbian use and awareness. The Symbian operating system has now been made royalty-free so any manufacturer can use it free-of-charge, and the Symbian "source code" is about to become open source, along much the same lines as Google's Android operating system.

Don't worry if that last part sounded like gibberish, you don't need to know anything about operating systems in order to use them. In fact you probably use several different OSes every day, in your computer, your phone, your games console, even your car if it's a new model. OSes intended for public use hide their workings behind easy-to-use interfaces so you never have to worry about what goes on behind the scenes.

    What is a "smartphone" anyway?

Well, different people have different definitions of the word, but basically it means a combination of a computer and a mobile phone. Smartphones are like pocket-sized PCs, and you can even attach a monitor and full-size keyboard to many smartphones (including the 5800).

If you want a very technical definition, we would say that a smartphone lets you install and run native software. Native software means applications and games that can access the phone's computing hardware very directly, which means they can use the hardware to its fullest.

Non-smart phones can run Java apps and games, but these have to run through a special application called Java VM, which slows things down and restricts what the Java software can do. Native apps can work directly with the phone itself, and that's why smartphones can run more advanced applications than normal phones. For example smartphone games tend to have much better graphics than games on ordinary phones, because smartphone games are native software.
