The Discovery​

A man in his 60s was rushed to a hospital in Japan after passing out. Despite doctors' efforts, he passed away from sepsis (a life-threatening reaction to an infection). It wasn't until a post-mortem examination that forensic pathologists discovered the source of the problem: a 9cm aluminium eyeliner pencil lodged inside him.

How it happened​

The eyeliner had been inserted into his rectum (likely during sexual activity) years prior. However, it didn't just stay there:

• Perforation: The pencil was pushed so hard that it pierced through the wall of his rectum and into his bladder.
• The Stone: Once the tip of the eyeliner was inside the bladder, mineral deposits from his urine began to crystallize around it. Over time, this formed a massive 6.5cm bladder stone (about the size of a large lemon) that was literally "stuck" to the eyeliner.
  

The Medical Outcome​

​

The man had reportedly suffered from intermittent stomach pain for three years but never sought successful treatment for the underlying cause. The presence of the object and the stone eventually caused a severe kidney infection (pyelonephritis), which led to the sepsis that killed him.
