Yes.. true. The in-line engines are making a comeback. I wonder why they went out of fashion in the first place, being a simpler design - Probably the overall length of the engine.

"Probably the overall length of the engine" >>Yes, exactly this. And the fact that they were NOT suitable for FWD applications (transverse mounting). So manufacturers kept developing more compact V6 platforms to be used for different models. IF you`ve changed spark plugs in a FWD V6, you`d know what a pain in the arse that is. Longitudinal straight 6`s are so much easier to work on/service.

Oh .. Thanks a lot for the explanation. I do have a V6 but no spark plugs. ;)

To whoever the gutless, spineless, most importantly brainless donkey made this anonymous comment... (donkeys do have a brain but it's quite apparent that this one hasn't) I hate donkeys like this.
Toyota had this technology more than 15 years ago. And another member here informs me that Honda had it too. So what?
In case you are bloody ignorant, Toyota is the top car manufacturer in the world. Not because of donkeys like you, but because they make top class engines in terms of reliability. If you care to look Mercedes isn't even in the top ten of engine manufacturers. But Toyota is.

This is an intelligent discussion, probably not suited for idiots like you who would probably riding a bicycle, but comment on a MB.

Go and do some reading and get a life. Pathetic.

At least, first learn to spell the word Toyota

Yes, so did Honda`s IMA. Similar tech bust mostly used for 'Hybrid' versions. Merc` 48v is system is standard for every application where the M256 engine is used. Plus all the benefits of a straight 6 :nerd: (simplicity, high torque, smoothness, power delivery,etc...)

You are very knowledgeable about motor vehicles, are you in the Auto industry?

That`s also true.. Newly designed "models" (or rather platforms) are mostly better in every aspect.

No machan, didn't do Engineering (i.e. Mechanical Eng. is what I like most) due to job prospects back then. Just before Year 2000, when I was looking in to what to do, IT was the bomb!

Always been a car nut, auto industry as a whole is kind of like my hobby :D
