Origin of letter ෆ.

Please can someone tell me about the history/origin of the Sinhala letter ෆ?

I understand ෆ came into the Sinhala script about 30 years ago. I tried to research more on the history of the letter ෆ, and I only found something that said it is a new letter for the English F sound, but didn't go into detail on its origin or what brought about the idea to have a new letter in the Sinhala alphabet for the F sound.

I hope I can get a detailed explanation about the letter ෆ soon.

I do know that the letter ෆ was coined by J. B. Dissanayake in the early 1980s for the English F sound. But I do not know where he got that letter from or what sparked the idea to have a letter in the Sinhala alphabet for the F sound.

I got a copy of the Encyclopedia of Sinhala by J. B. Dissanayake and a facsimile of A Comprehensive Grammar of the Sinhalese language by Abraham Mendis Gunasekera and found all my answers in regards to ෆ​. This letter was coined in and used more or less since the late 19th century. It would be interesting to see other examples of ෆ from the late 19th century and early 20th century.
