Please can someone tell me about the history/origin of the Sinhala letter ?

I understand came into the Sinhala script about 30 years ago. I tried to research more on the history of the letter , and I only found something that said it is a new letter for the English F sound, but didn't go into detail on its origin or what brought about the idea to have a new letter in the Sinhala alphabet for the F sound.

I hope I can get a detailed explanation about the letter soon.

I do know that the letter was coined by J. B. Dissanayake in the early 1980s for the English F sound. But I do not know where he got that letter from or what sparked the idea to have a letter in the Sinhala alphabet for the F sound.

I got a copy of the Encyclopedia of Sinhala by J. B. Dissanayake and a facsimile of A Comprehensive Grammar of the Sinhalese language by Abraham Mendis Gunasekera and found all my answers in regards to ෆ. This letter was coined in and used more or less since the late 19th century. It would be interesting to see other examples of from the late 19th century and early 20th century. :)
