Over 250 soldiers killed yesterday and 48 bodies brought to Kurunegala, says Dayasiri
(Lanka-e-News, November 21, 2008, 5.10 PM) Kurunegala district United National Party (UNP) MP Dayasiri Jayasekara says that over 250 soldiers have been killed in clashes at Muhamalai and Kilali yesterday (20).
The residential patients of Anuradhapura and Colombo hospitals were discharged yesterday to treat the influx of admissions and nobody is commenting on the situation. MP Jayasekara made these observations at a press briefing held in the official residence of the Opposition Leader today (21).
Forty eight bodies of the personnel killed in clashes had been brought to Kurunegala district last week, he said adding that he attended several funerals. He said that there were no calculations on the number of bodies brought to other districts. Pointing out that there are victories as well as defeats in war, he said that military authorities are not responding to the deaths. The MP said that wrong information goes in media as a result of not exposing the truth.
He said that the attacks by the LTTE ‘toy aircrafts’ were broadcast by international media like CNN and Al Jazeera although Sri Lankan media were not given information. MP Jayasekara said that the UNP was ready to give a hand against the enemy but truth should be unveiled.
He said that the Prime Minister hid the statistics of injured soldiers to the parliament at the last emergency debate. He asked how such information could be obtained if they are hidden in that way.
He said that UNP would not act in the way the SLFP and the JVP acted during the UNP government’s peace effort and UNP would not attempt to turn back the war.
The UNP MP said that his party would launch a programme to tell the truth to the public regarding war.
In response to a question posed by a journalist, MP Jayasekara stated that the government was getting ready for a snap election and the President would try to market Kilinochchi to win that election. He added that the government cannot drag the war further.
He pointed that the government that said that Kilinochchi was at arms’ length has taken two and half months to go that distance. Pointing out that Kilinochchi will be marketed at another election, he said that the government is marching to maintain power over the dead bodies of the soldiers.
He said that both Karuna and Pillaiyan were pets of the government one time. Now Pillaiyan is in fear and he says that his secretary was by non-LTTE elements. He asked who the killers are then and said that both Karuna and Pillaiyan are now prisoners of the government.
When a journalist asked if the UNP was to take the 17 MPs that crossed over to the government back to party ranks, he said that several of them are having a dialogue aiming to come back.
