P. Chidambaram has become Home Minister of India. It is learnt that his appointment has been confirmed by the President of India from Jakarta.
Shivraj Patil's resignation has been accepted and Chidambaram is moving into the office just vacated by him.
M. K. Narayanan has also stepped down as National Security Advisor.
Shivraj Patil had tendered his papers to the Prime Minister earlier today.
Patil's resignation has been accepted by the President of India Pratibha Patil. According to reports, the President of India, who is currently on a visit to Jakarta, has signed the necessary documents and a fax of the same has been received by the Prime Minister's ofice.
The Finance Ministry vacated by P. Chidambaram will be looked after by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
It may be recollected that Dr. Manmohan Singh is a reputed economist and was the Finance Minister in the 90s when Indian economy was going through very troubled times. He had then scripted India's growth story through liberalization.
Meanwhile, National Security Advisor M. K. Narayanan's resignation has also been accepted. His was the second head to roll in the aftermath of the Mumbai terror attack.
