Reward patriotism with pay hikeThe main opposition UNP yesterday congratulated the security forces on their heroic efforts to gain control of the entire Wanni area with the capture of Mullaitivu and highlighted the need to increase the salaries of the security forces.
UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe in a letter addressed to Chief of Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Donald Perera and Police Chief Jayantha Wickramaratne said this victory was achieved due to the courageous and selfless dedication by all ranks of the armed forces and the police amid immense difficulty and danger to their lives.
“Today through your commitment and sacrifice, you have further strengthened the territorial integrity of our country. We will not forget that the security forces made it possible,” Mr. Wickremesinghe said.
He asked him to convey the UNP’s heartfelt gratitude to all ranks of the air force, army and the navy. In his letter to the Police Chief, Mr. Wickremesinghe said the Special Task Force had also played a leading role in strengthening the territorial integrity of Sri Lanka.
UNP parliamentarian Palitha Range Bandara told a news conference yesterday the UNP was particular to see that the salaries of the security forces personnel and the police were increased.
He said for a nominal salary these personnel were performing a great service to the nation while the Ministers and other government officials were enjoying various perks.
“Security forces personnel have engaged in this task with dedication and therefore as members of the UNP we salute them for their achievement made in amid great difficultiy,” Mr. Range Bandara said.
