An eight year old child was killed after being caught in a cross-fire between a group of policemen and cattle-thieves in the Beruwala area today evening.

The Police team from Maharagama acting on a tip-off had sent out a team to Beruwala to arrest the persons involved robbing cattle and transporting to Colombo.

“Our team was waiting in ambush when the vehicle carrying the persons identified the policemen and fired at them. Police had returned fire, but a three-wheeler passing by had crossed the path and a child was hit”, a police officer said.

He said an investigation was under way about the shooting incident while the alleged cattle thieves had escaped.
