Police in a night raid on Sunday have arrested 78 beggars from Kandy town as part of a security operation in the area.
Of the persons arrested 48 have been produced before a Magistrate and transferred to a rehabilitation camp in Ridiyagama, Kurunegala while the rest also would be sent to a similar camp, police said.
All the personal belongings were set on fire near the Kandy railway station, before they were taken away.
However similar operations have been carried out in the Kandy town earlier and some of the beggars had returned to the town within three days. One of them had paid Rs. 2,500 as three wheel charges to travel from Ridiyagama back to Kandy.
