Ministers and parliamentarians are to get a windfall next year in the shape of another salary increase as the government has undertaken to increase the salaries of judicial officers through the 2009 budget as salaries of judges and lawmakers are combined through a parliamentary resolution a senior parliamentary source said. Salaries and Cadres Commission Chairman Lionel Fernando said, the government had given an assurance to the Supreme Court that a salary increase was possible for judicial officers through the 2009 budget. The vote on this budget is fixed for December 8. The proposal to increase the salaries and allowances of judicial officers was conveyed to the Supreme Court consequent to a petition filed by a group of High Court Judges requesting a salary increase. “President Mahinda Rajapaksa has opined that a salary increase for judicial officers was possible through the 2009 budget and Presidential Secretary Lalith Weeratunga conveyed this message to the Supreme Court. The salary increment issue for Judges was thus settled amicably pending a salary increase for them in 2009” Mr. Fernando said. A resolution passed in Parliament in 2006 on salaries and allowances to Members of Parliament, Ministers, Leader of the Opposition, the Speaker and the Prime Minister states: “Revisions of the allowances of Parliamentarians will be made on par with the revisions of the allowances the salary structure of the Judicial Service whenever the salary structure undergoes a revision”. Accordingly the monthly salary and allowances paid to the Prime Minister were increased from Rs. 34,000/- to Rs. 54,000/- from 1.1..2006 and again to Rs. 71,500 from 1.1.2007. The Speaker’s salary and allowances were increased from Rs. 31,800 to Rs. 59,900 and to Rs. 68,500; a Ministers’ and the Leader of the Opposition’s salary was increased from Rs. 29,815/- to 47,450/- to Rs. 65,000/-; a Deputy Ministers’ and Deputy Chairman of Committees from Rs. 28,750/- to Rs. 46,125/-, and Rs. 63,500/-, Parliamentarians’ from Rs. 22,100/- to Rs. 38,192.50 and to Rs. 54,,285/-. In another resolution in 2006, Parliament increased the President’s salary from Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 61,500/- effective from 1.1.2006 and to Rs. 97,500 from 1.1.2007 Further, the difference in salaries and allowances of lawmakers drawn up to 31.12..2005 and after 1.1.2006 and 1.1.2007 were paid in two installments in 2006 and 2007 in terms of Public Administrative Circular 6/2006, the parliamentary source said. “The Parliamentary Affairs Minister will have to submit a resolution under article 68(1) of the Constitution to increase salaries and allowances of all Parliamentarians after the salaries and allowances of judicial officers will be raised in the budget for 2009 as pledged” the source added. -Dailymirror do they actually need a salary increment wen they already have more than wat they needed?? wonder wat other taxes and prices of stuff the govt will increase to compensate this!
