Possibility of SADS-Cov jumping across from animals to humans

    In 2017, Guangdong province, China, saw the emergence of a new highly virulent swine acute diarrhoea syndrome coronavirus (SADS‐CoV).
    This fatal diarrhoea caused the death of 24,693 piglets. But from May 2017 to January 2019, there were no new SADS cases reported.
    Again another diarrhoea outbreak of SADS‐CoV was reported in Southern China on February 2019.

    The SADS-Cov has been not known to infect any humans so far. But a team of researchers from the University of North Carolina has reported this is a possibility. They created a synthetic clone of the SADS-CoV virus and infected human sample cells with this derivative recombinant SADS-CoV or rSADS-CoV to see if virus transmission, replication and in vitro gene expression was possible.

    The result shows that SADS-CoV replicated efficiently in primary human cells derived from both the lungs and the intestines. This highlights the intrinsic potential of the SADS-CoV virus for cross-species transmission, especially from pigs to humans.
    Given the risk of pathogenicity in humans due to SADS-CoV — and especially observing the global effect SARS-CoV-2 has had — mechanisms to block this transmission and replication need to be addressed urgently.

    SADS-CoV is an alphacoronavirus, derived from bat coronaviruses called HKU2, and is distantly related to human common cold coronaviruses HCoV-229E and HCoV-NL63.
    However, human sera to HCoV-NL63 did not block infection with SADS-CoV. The good news is that Remdesivir, an antiviral drug that inhibits RNA synthesis, blocked replication of SADS-CoV.
