President challenges LTTE to free civilians and face the military
President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Thursday (March 26) called upon all Tamil parties to join him to obtain the democratic rights to the people of the North. He challenged the LTTE to release all civilians they are using as a shield and fight in the open.
The President was addressing a special meeting he held with all Tamil and Muslim political parties
The Tamil National Alliance, the largest Tamil political party, which has 22 representatives in Parliament, failed to respond to the President's invitation for the meeting, apparently in fear of LTTE reprisals, it was revealed at the meeting.
President Rajapaksa said that despite their claim that they are the saviours of the Tamil people, the LTTE is keeping them as human shield for its own protection. He also said the security forces are behaving in a very humanitarian manner and providing shelter and protection to the Northern Tamils fleeing from the LTTE held areas. Democratic rule will be a fact in the North before long.
Representatives of the People's Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) said there were enough food stocks available in the liberated areas in the Vanni and that it was satisfied with the manner the security forces were treating the civilians who arrived in Vavuniya and Mannar from the LTTE held areas. The President said that it was the duty of the Government to provide all essential requirements including food and medicine to all citizens of the country.
"This is a war to liberate the Tamils of the North" the President reiterated to the minority political parties.

Senior Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa said that a total 5,065 patients who fled LTTE held areas had been admitted to Trincomalee, Kandy, Anuradhapura and Dambulla hospitals and their health conditions had improved.

Up-Country People's Front, Democratic People's Front, Tamil United Liberation Front and the People's Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam.
