Please help me to solve this hardware problem.

    I got a p4 with Asus P4v8x-x board. Motherboard's SATA controller is VIA VT8237 so it doesnt support SATA 300, only SATA150 @ 1.5Gb/s

I bought a Maxtor DiamondMax21 250GB SATA II, because it had a jumper setting for limit it to work with SATA 150.

when i connect the disk with jumper set to 300MB/s bios will detect and with drivers installed winXP will also show the device correctly, But i cant format any partition on it. So i cant use it on my PC ! Its same with other OS's like Vista & Ubuntu.

without jumper setting BIOS wont even detect the disk.

But driver works on other Pc's with SataII.

    SO what can i do?
If i get a pci/usb to sata convertor will i be able to use it as the main & bootable hard disk? How much will those cost in lankan market ?

    Thanks for any help :)

Your motherboard SATA controller only supports 150MB/s (SATA 1.5Gb/s) data transfer rate. So keep your jumper setting to 1.5Gb/s

I think your problem is WIN XP Bootable CD doesn't have drivers for VIA RAID controller. So if you have Floppy disk that came with the motherboard labeled VIA SATA RAID driver you can use it. Press "F6" (I guess) when it prompts you to press F6 to use 3rd party RAID driver at the begging of WINXP installation. After all the files loaded for installation it will ask you to whether you want to load 3rd party RAID driver from floppy disk.. do that and select XP driver.. done.. then you can partition your HDD and install XP..

If you don't have that disk.. you can make your own.. Download this and extract the files
    http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/misc/ide/via/VIARAID220d.zip
Then go to folder VIARAID->DriverDisk and run the MakeDisk program to create a Driver disk

You don't have to do this if your BIOS has a setting some thing like SATA mode.. it might have options of IDE or RAID.. change it to IDE if u can find that settings.. If not try disabling RAID..

    Thanks for the reply,

But i already done that(actually i made a slipstream XP disk with via raid drivers) so now xp detects the drive, but still it cant format or copy a file on to that Hard. Vista and Ubuntu detects the driver without any additional drivers but they too cant format or copy files into this.

btw i couldnt find any setting in the BIOS like "IDE/RAID" but i'll try again see is there any.

i tried seatools when it was on my pc, connected to sata port. But it said theres error on conecting to HD.

I couldnt try it when connected to SATAII pc or when it was on usb.

But i dont think its a prob with Hd itself. Cos today i ran it @ 1.5Gb/s (forced by jumper) on a SataII machine without a prob.

I had a Maxtor 250GB HDD few years back which suppose to be SATA I but it's actually worked on 3Gbs.. and motherboard with nForce 4 chispset . I also had trouble getting to work that hard drive sometimes and later I found out that Maxtor HDD incompatible with nForce 4 chipset. So it gave me some strange results...
But you got a different chipset. But still it is possible your mainboard isn't compatible with Diamond MAX 250Gb as Maxtor DiamondMAX 250Gb is pretty strange HDD labeled as SATA I with 3Gbs transfer rate .. make sure your BIOS v is latest (1009.008)

yeah, i updated my bios to that version too. but that didnt help. I too feels that this isnt a problem of sata1 sataII, cos it shows files which written onto by other pc's. SO this suppose to be a prob of mainboards chipset incompatibility. But i dont have much time to find this out,my vacation is over. :(

Only thing im going to see now is finding a convertor. Its better if i can get a SATA->IDE conveter. So if any knows anywhere i can get one please tell.

    Thanks for all the replies.

Kamalmawa & Malinga really appreciate your help. Keep up the good work. Nice to see guys like you here.

yes try to find a SATA to IDE converter. If its worked then it's probably your SATA controller incompatible with your HDD.. If it is possible try to return your HDD to place you bought and get a different brand.. And Good luck finding a Converter,,
