    Guys,

When ever I try to connect to the internet via usb modem I get an error "Error 31 : A device attached to the system is not functioning"
 I tried two usb modems and both gave same result
Does anyone know how to solve this? (without formatting the machine)

The "-31 a device attached to the system is not functioning" error normally occurs when there is a problem with the destination drive (i.e. the one you are writing the backup image to). That in turn can lead to errors such as 'cannot find file specified'.

The easiest thing to check this, is to run the backup to another drive. You can even write it to another volume on the internal drive.

If the external drive is a simple USB, eSATA or Firewire drive, you should run chkdsk against it. If it is not a local drive, e.g. NAS, you need to use the equivalent tool provided by the NAS manufacturer. Whatever disk you have, you can also run a disk diagnostic tool against the HDD (e.g. Seagate toools) to help identify if there are bad sectors on the drive (something that chkdsk does not do).

I got it sorted out. The problem was caused by a software called "Connectify". Once I installed it the modems started to work fine. Anyway, thanks :)
