    UPDATE: BBC report

A mosque in Sri Lanka has been forced to abandon Friday prayers amid community tensions in the central town of Dambulla.

About 2,000 Buddhists, including monks, marched to the mosque and held a demonstration demanding its demolition.

A mosque official told the BBC he and several dozen companions were trapped inside and feared the crowd would destroy the building.

Overnight the mosque had been targeted by a fire-bombing - no-one was hurt.

The BBC's Charles Haviland in Colombo says the tensions have been growing in the neighbourhood.

Shortly after the protest the mosque was evacuated and its Friday prayers cancelled.
Many Buddhists regard Dambulla as a sacred town and in recent months there had been other sectarian tensions in this part of Sri Lanka, our correspondent says.

Last September a monk led a crowd to demolish a Muslim shrine in Anuradhapura, not far from Dambulla.

Buddhism is the religion of the majority of the population in Sri Lanka.

    Dear All
it is very sad to note the tense situation in Dambulla. and what is even more sadening is the support of the Singhala majority towards the destruction of this Mosque. Most of the people in this forum are going about talking of destroying all mosques and chasing away the muslims of this country.
The muslims in this country have been living in peace with the Majority Singhala population and other ethnic groups. The muslims treat the Singhalese in a respectful way and in no way like to cause any rift. During times of war it was the Muslims who sided with the Majority against Terrorism which destroyed this country for 30 years. Even during the recent Geneva Vote, many Muslim countries voted against the US convention where as India voted in favour of it. After all of this the muslims are still looked upon in a very negative aspect. We have suffered for 30 long years in war, please dont let petty minded people pull us back to the dark ages again. Let there be peace in this country forever.

to be frank i dont want SL to be another Saudi where there's no reliogous freedom. But on the other hand I dont want SL to have more mosques and dont wanna see ever increasing muslims.

    should strike a balance
