Thousands of students are converging from three different fronts and are heading for the main Matara bus station and hundreds of police and army personnel have been rushed to the area, residents said.
They said the students belonging to several universities both in Matara and elsewhere are seeking to draw attention to the current crisis faced in the higher education sector.
A senior policeman said that the students will be prevented from entering the main town’s square in a bid to protect the public and property.
The students are moving from the Wellamadama Junction, the Kamburupitiya Road and Nupe Junction.
