Nobody really likes being caught out in the rain for too long, but for some reason characters in movies love it. Rain in movies has always been a great cinematic device to help tell a story better and use it as a set piece during scenes. Rain in movies becomes a way to explain a meaning of desperation, revelation or add that little bit of romanticism in a scene. So take out your umbrella and try not to get yourself too drenched as we check out this sopping wet list.​

1. Jurassic Park (1993)

As the cars break down outside the T-Rex enclosure, the heavens begin to open.


2. Spider-Man (2002)

As the rain comes down in buckets, MJ grabs hold of Spider-Man, pulling up his mask to share the wettest upside-down kiss ever seen on the big screen.

3. The Notebook (2004)

Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams set hearts aflutter and pulses racing with an outrageously passionate kiss is the midst of a thorough soaking. True love could care less about soggy clothes.

4. Forrest Gump (1994)

Forrest's period in Vietnam is constantly spent enduring the rain. "We been through every kind of rain there is," he explains. "Little bitty stingin' rain, and big ol' fat rain. Rain that flew in sideways, and sometimes rain even seemed to come straight up from underneath."


5. The Matrix Revolutions (2003)

Neo goes toe to toe with Agent Smith towards the end of the film, as the rain comes down in buckets. Turns out not one of those watching Agents remembered to bring a brolly.

6. Saving Private Ryan (1998)

As the unit troops onwards, a light drizzle begins to fall, before growing steadily heavier and louder. Before you know it, it isn't only raindrops whistling through the air… it's bullets too.


7. The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers (2002)

As the defenders at Helm's Deep prepare themselves for the Uruk-hai onslaught, the rain begins to come down in droves. Stiff upper lip time, gentlemen…

8. Say Anything (1989)

John Cusack ruddy loves standing in the rain, doesn't he? It makes him seem more brooding and intense. If you're serious about a girl, you have to prove it by getting very, very wet. Textbook stuff.


9. Inception (2010)

As the inception crew arrive in the first level of Fischer's subconscious, they're greeted by an extremely rainy cityscape. Things go from bad to worse when it becomes clear that Fischer's projections have become militarised. Bummer.

As Mills and Somerset chase the killer out into the street, they can hardly see where they're going, so heavy is the rain. Disorientated and taken by surprise, Mills is held at gunpoint by the killer, who then turns and disappears into the murk.

11. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)

Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) marries Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) during a swashbuckling, rain-drenched swordfight. The pair seal the deal, after dispatching a few more baddies with their swords, with an epic kiss amid the maelstrom.


12. Sweet Home Alabama (2002)

Melanie (Reese Witherspoon) is wearing a wedding dress, though she's not kissing the guy she was going to marry. Instead she's smooching childhood sweetheart Jake (Josh Lucas). During a storm. Amid a field of lightning rods. Makes sense.

13. Back To The Future 2 (1989)

A bolt of lightning hits the DeLorean, seemingly incinerating the Doc. However, as the rain begins to fall, a mysterious man appears with a telegram from the Old West. Yep, the Doc's gone back in time again!


14. Seven Samurai (1954)

The final battle between the samurai and the marauding bandits is a total washout. Not that the samurais are too fussed. Their skills are such that they can slice and dice individual drops!

15. The Day After Tomorrow (2004)

New York is battered by persistent heavy rain, so much so that the Hudson ends up bursting its banks. Then a tsunami comes rolling in, just to put the old tin lid on it!


16. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

As Andy emerges from his shit-coated escape pipe, he flops into the river and reaches his arms to the heavens, allowing the falling rain to wash him clean.

When college friends Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) and Anjali (Kajol) are reunited after several years, sparks fly and how!


18. A Cinderella Story (2004)

The rain scene in A Cinderella Story where Austin (Chad Michael Murray) runs up from the football field in the middle of the game and kisses Sam (Hilary Duff).

The crew make their landing on the newly terraformed LV-426, where a nasty storm is raging. Having touched down safely, the marines make their way cautiously into the eerily abandoned colony…


20. Point Break (1991)

Utah tracks down Bodhi to Australia's Bells Beach, where a violent storm has whipped up a once-in-a-lifetime wave. Giving his old pal the way out he so craves, Utah undoes the handcuffs and lets Bodhi ride to his doom.

Matt (Ben Affleck) and Elektra stand on a rooftop in the rain. Daredevil can only see Elektra, when it's raining or when things are flowing.


22. Breakfast At Tiffany's (1961)

Paul and Holly search for her beloved cat amid the rain-spattered streets of Manhattan, finally recovering it and enveloping it in a soggy cuddle.

23. Pride and Prejudice (2005)

Mr. Darcy proposes to Elizabeth in the rain by saying that he loves her most ardently, and yet unwittingly insults her in the process.


24. Little Women (1994)

Due to a misunderstanding Prof. Bhaer thinks she is the one married to Laurie and Jo has to literally run after him in the rain.
