Opposition UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday challenged President Mahinda Rajapaksa to a public debate on the allegations that the Ceasefire Agreement betrayed the country, the curtailment of democratic rights of the people and other real problems faced by ordinary citizens. The Opposition Leader said President Rajapaksa was accusing him of betraying the country because the President did not have the strength to solve the real problems of the people. He said that just throwing accusations was a "cowardly act."
Mr. Wickremesinghe said if this challenge was accepted by the President the debate could be held under internationally accepted rules and he was always ready for such a debate adding that if President Rajapaksa did not accept the challenge, the entire world would come to know that he is a "coward."
The Opposition Leader questioned as to why President Rajapaksa as the Opposition Leader at that time supported and assisted him to implement the Ceasefire Agreement if it betrayed the country. He challenged the President to prove these allegations in a public debate with him.
Mr. Wickremesinghe was speaking at interactive public meetings in Maradana and Suduwella in support of the Western Provincial Council UNP candidates.
