(May 31, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Reliable sources based in Eastern Sri Lanka said “A Jihad group active in Sri Lanka has started training their suicide group for targeting their enemies.” The most chilling detail we received on the suicide bomber who recently did his operation at Colombo targeting a police bus and killing 15 policemen, was that the bomber was from a Jihad group in Sri Lanka.
We note that a Jihad is defined as “a holy war undertaken as a sacred duty by Muslims.”
According to the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID), the recent suicide bomber’s National Identity Card number was 820244769V, his name Ibrahim Levke Mubharak and address Hospital Road, Kinnia, Trincomalee.
“Twenty six year old Mibharak was one of the senior members of their group, and he has met some foreign Jihad leaders who came to Sri Lanka a few months ago,” sources told Sri Lanka Guardian.
According to a source close to the Sri Lanka Navy, “The majority of Muslims in Sri Lanka are against Jihad, but due to a lack of political unity in the Muslim community and suffering at the hands of the LTTE, Muslim youth, particularly in the Eastern Province, have been turning towards Jihad since the 1970s.”
Continuing, our source said “The seeds of the Islamic Jihad in Sri Lanka were spawned particularly after a visit by Dr. U.L. Ahmed Ashruff, who was the leader of a Saudi-based Wahabi Islamic group called Tharus Hatheesh. Moreover, P Jainul Abdeen from Tamil Nadu was a famous Islamic preacher active in Sri Lanka in the 1970s. He imported Wahabism from South India into Sri Lanka. The Wahabi sect is growing in power in the East, particularly in areas like Kathankudy, Marathamunai, Muthur etc. There are 65 Mosques in Kathankudy alone, which is considered the most densely populated village in South Asia.”.
Intelligence sources claim that there were two migrations to Afghanistan of Sri Lankan Muslims for Jihad or ‘holy-war’. The first was during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. The second was more recent, when the United States invaded Afghanistan to crush the Taliban and Al-Qaeda. The Sri Lankan Jihadis’ quest had been facilitated by the Lashkar-e-Toiba, an Islamic Fundamentalist organization operating in Pakistan. Sources also claim that individuals connected to the Muslim Defence Force in South India were also connected to the smuggling of Sri Lankan Muslim fighters to Afghanistan.
Meanwhile our sources reveal that more than 20 young males were training together at some secret locations in the East as well as some Mulism-majority areas in the South like Mawanella.
One of our reiable sources for this story added “Their seniors took basic weapons training under the Taliban based in Afghanistan and are now passing on their expertise locally.”
