The total container handling capacity at the Colombo port has recorded a growth of 5.7 per cent in 2015 compared to 2014. Total container volume comprises of import, export containers and transshipments and the total amount of containers handled by the port was 5,185,467 in 2015 compared to the 4,907,915 containers handled in 2014. Import and export container volume has been increased by 8.1 percent in 2015, to 1,217,971. Container transshipment volumes have also been increased by 4.9 percent to 3,967,496 in 2015. Sri Lanka Ports Authority said the growth was mainly due to the commitment of its strong management and employees at the Colombo harbour. (IH)
