Two days after the fracas that took place in Kandy among players in the match between Kandy SC and Navy SC another ugly incident took place yesterday in the inter-school Division 1B encounter between Thurstan and Ananda at Longden Place. The game ended in a 22 all draw.
It was a pathetic scene where the referee Dimitri Gunasekera was attacked by a spectator to the presence of all who had come to witness the game. The attack took place once the long whistle was blown.
If not for five policemen who were on duty who came to the rescue of the referee it would have flared up into a major scuffle with battle spreading between supporters of the schools that contested the match.
The organizers of the tournament should take serious action against incidents of this nature as it does augur well for the game of rugby in whole. Though this being a Division 1B encounter it was a clash between two prominent schools in the metropolis and it is their duty to see that incidents of this nature are nipped in the bud
Thurstan having led 12-0 at the breather increased the lead to 22-0 in the second half with just over 20 minutes of play left. It was from here that Ananda got into their act and they went on a scoring spree to equal it 22 all.
Ananda’s late burst saw them make up their scoring through a goal and three tries with two tries being scored by No 8 Duminda Lakmal and a try each from centre Ishan Samitha and second row Charith Mapatuna with full back Oshan Chandima converting one.
Thurstan accumulated their points through a penalty try and three tries with second row prop forward Ishan Udayanga, winger Amila Samaraweera and centre Viduranga Weerasinghe scoring the tries while full back Eranda de Costa was responsible for the penalty try.

I dont think this is true sportsmanship. If you play sports you should know to accept defeat and victory alike. The referee or the umpire or the match official's word is the final in sports. Going to attack him or abuse him is something that cannot be accepted!!
