around myself..

A few days ago, one of my Tamil friends met with an accident. She lives in wallawathe. Car crashed into her while she was crossing the road. It also happened in wallawathe area.

She was admitted to the kalubowila hospital. It was the best option available in that case as it is situated near to the place where accident happened.

We visit her as soon as we got the news. It was the accident ward and I found she was lying unconsciously in the bed with her parents standing nearby.

As I told you earlier she is a Tamil and her parents also Tamil. They are not good in Sinhala. Her mother can mange some Sinhala phrases but not to extend.

There was a nurse in that ward and she is a Sinhalese. She was busy at that time and as I understood she is doing her level best all that time with looking after every patient in that ward.

Heart breaker :(

My friend's parents couldn't speak Sinhala neither English. Our nurse also couldn't speak Tamil. Can you imagine the scenario there?

It was a total heart breaker. Her parents couldn't ask any single question about her loving daughter even though she was lying there with immense pain. No wonder they feeling left alone even though they are living in their motherland. I found myself guilty just by standing there. I did my best and became a mediator for the moment.

Just think we are trying to bring peace and harmony into our country, still we cannot give them who can speak Tamil in hospital which is located in an area where there are high population of Tamils. There were lot of Tamil patients in that ward, I found it difficult to believe that we not having Tamil nurses in those wards.

What I suggest is that we should concern more about these small things before looking into the big picture. We should worry about the real needs of our Tamil brothers and sisters rather than wasting time on debating about big political solutions.

Please send this message to anyone who can take immediate action to prevail these types of incidents happening in future. Otherwise it won’t be a surprise to a rising as we saw for last few decades.
:(

The place I love to live....
in srilanka always tamils are left without options, government has not done anything to bring peace to tamils then putting them in to trouble over & over again.

still sinhala people treat tamils like dogs..... that's the attitude of sinhala people.
i have face these situations many times.

we must not forget that tamils also part of srilanka, should not treat them different.

I dont think there are any restrictions for tamil to become nurses in the country. The doors are widely open.

Well in your case, whose fault is this???
    Govt. of Sri Lanka
    Sinhales
    Tamils

    Very sad story... :(

There should be people who can speak Tamil in a place like that....

Tamil people also should pay more attention to learning Sinhalese.... Otherwise it is like you are born in France and cannot speak French...

    In my own heart
Very sad, the awareness between the two races should be developed as soon as possible by using language as a basis.

Tamils and Sinhalese all should learn each others languages.

In a government hospital, anywhere in the country, there should be at least a dozen of bi-lingual people to cope up with these issues.

What if a local traveler, a Sinhalese, get injured in a Tamil speaking area. This would be his blithe as well. If we can implement these things there want be much of a different between two races. We can all live together, as Sri-Lankans we know that. It is only the Indians who wants to get hands on the oil and the minerals want a political solution for the North and East.

in an area like wellawaththa...i think it IS essential that there should be nurses an docs who speak tamil
in the case of tamils...i think they ough 2 learn sinhala defa coz they r livin in the capital district COLOMBO 4 god sake...just becoz they live in wellawaththa dsnt mean they dont hav 2 learn sinhala coz they r livin among a majority of tamils...

imagine if this happend 2 them in some place else ? they hav a far larger chance in running into sinhala pple than tamils and thats obvious....

so again i say it is important 4 both ppl to lrn each other's languages....

pls dnt bring out racism in2 this...i hope ur frnd will get bettr soon

so sad machan... this is the fact and sady we are facing it. responsible leaders should ation on this. this is only one scenario. there's lots more outside.
Sinhala is the national language and i don't understand why the tamil schools are not showing interest to teach sinhala atleast as the second language for their students. as far as i know sinhala is been always optonal. i think this should change. this is what i think. sorry if i'm wrong.

i dont agree with your saying, tamils are treated like dogs just because of them being tamils. i havnt seen that happening in my life time(born in 1986).maybe these types of indecent might have happen in past, but i assure it is not happening now.there might be incidents where some people(i would call them worse than animals ) acting more commonly like that, towards all the races.not just tamils.thats some other story.

majority sinhalese people dont treat tamils or people from any other races differently.please gets your facts straight before commenting :)

I saw on the news papers recently that the govt is taking steps to introduce all 3 languages to govt bodies.
As always, they wont get implemented fast but the steps are being taken.
At the same time, had the situation been reversed an a non tamil was struck in say Jaffna or Batti, they'd be facing the same situation.
The language barrier or mind sent is not limited on just one set of people in this country.

i think it is good way to teach them sinhala.same time i would say learing tamil also should make mandatory.if we can take english as a main why we cant do it with sinhala/tamil
