Angry crowds nearly manhandled Ceylinco Consolidated Chairman Lalith Kotalawala at the BMICH on Tuesday (Dec. 23) over the massive fraud committed allegedly by the Golden Key Credit Card Company's Executive Director. The incident occurred when Kotalawala invited the company's defrauded deposit holders to assure them that their investments would be paid in full after an audit is conducted into the embezzlement. He told them that the company's accounts would be finalized by January 31, 2009.
Two persons in the crowd had given the Ceylinco Boss knocks on his head and thrown water at him. He had promised the depositors that one month's interest would be paid in January for deposits above Rs. 3 million while deposits below that amount would be paid with interest by the end of February. The rest of the depositors would be paid by June.
Kotalawela had earlier planned to serve tea to the invitees but later changed his mind when the crowd became unmanageable.
Obviously this is another Sakvithi case although the real brains behind the scam may be still a mystery. Now, the million rupee question is how will it affect Kotalawala's image as a great benefactor and philanthropist?
