Aug 11, Colombo: Sri Lanka's legendary cricketer and deputy minister of present government, Sanath Jayasuriya has switched allegiance just six days ahead of the parliamentary election, according to a report in Daily FT.
The former United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Matara district parliamentarian has decided to support UNP candidate Sagala Ratnayake who is contesting in the Matara District.
Jayasuriya, Deputy Minister of Provincial Councils and Regional Development last month announced that he will not contest the upcoming parliamentary elections.
He had also resigned from the post of Sri Lanka Freedom Party Chief Organizer in Matara Electorate.
The cricketer turned politician will formally endorse Ratnayake at the UNP candidate's campaign office in Pamburaana, Matara at 4:30 p.m. today.
