Mumbai: The surgery on Kumar Sangakkara's right hand index finger was successfully performed by Dr. Gregory Hoy in Melbourne's Glenferrie Private Hospital yesterday.

"He was cheerful and not nervous while taken to the operation theatre", his wife Yehali said.

According to the doctor's instructions, Sangakkara was on a fast (no eating or no drinking of water) since morning. "This is the first surgery he is undergoing", Yehali said.

Sangakkara would need to come again for two days after four weeks for removal of wires.

Micro Mitek and Wires are implanted for his DIP Volar Plate Reconstruction and stabilize DIP joint. He is scheduled for an overnight stay in the hospital and in Melbourne for one week for removal of sutures, it is also learnt.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is to bear the total expenses of Sangakkara's surgery. The board is believed to have paid the total hospital bill charges of $ 6,850 including Dr. Hoy's operation fees ($ 2500) and operation theatre charges ($ 1,800).

Sangakkara would be able to resume his net practice a few weeks later.
