Sri Lankan president is set for easy victory, says survey

A religious observance of offering alms to mothers or ‘kiri ammawaru’ was held to invoke blessings on Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse at the historic Kelaniya Rajamaha Viharaya in Kelaniya yesterday. Offering of alms is considered a meritorious deed in Buddhism and especially alms to females who have nursed offsprings is considered to accrue more merit due to the respect for the parents as inculcated in the island nation’s culture

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse seems set for an easy victory over his rival and former army chief Sarath Fonseka in the January 26 presidential poll, according to an opinion survey.
Viplav Communications Pvt. Ltd., which has earlier been strategic advisers to numerous Indian politicians and conducted election surveys in India, conducted the survey in Sri Lanka. The findings of the survey were made available to IANS in New Delhi.
The poll shows Rajapakse leading in all provinces other than the Tamil-dominated north and multi-racial east and enjoying a 12% lead over his opponent in the island as a whole.
According to the survey, Rajapakse holds a dominant lead among the majority Sinhalese population who account for 74% of Sri Lanka’s population. He also enjoys a narrow lead among the Muslim voters.
However, he trails behind Fonseka among the Tamils of the north and east, the war zone where the military crushed the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in May last year leaving thousands dead.
Among the Tamils of Indian origin living in the tea plantation areas, Rajapakse enjoys majority support.
The sample size for the January 6-13 survey was 10,225.
According to it, people have graded the president very high on the skills and experience needed to run the next government.
Fonseka’s inexperience as a political administrator coupled with a pro-Rajapakse environment in the country was the clinching factor, the survey said.
The president is expected to do very well in Sinhalese-dominated North Central, Southern and Sabargamuwa provinces.
Fonseka has a good support base in eastern and northern Provinces. He also has the support of Tamils in Colombo.
Rajapakse has a slight edge over Fonseka among Muslim voters. Muslims, who also speak Tamil in many areas, are the second largest minority in Sri Lanka after the Tamils, who are dominantly Hindus.
According to the survey, Sinhalese Christians - most Sinhalese are Buddhists - support mostly the president compared to Tamil Christians.
Fonseka also has more support in urban areas while Rajpakse wields clout in rural areas. More women were found to be supportive of the president.
The survey found that a majority of respondents expressed the fear that the Tamil ethnic problem had not been solved fully.
The credit for winning the war against the LTTE is largely credited to the president, who came to power in November 2005 with a pledge to end the Tamil separatist campaign.
He then scored a narrow win over his main rival, Ranil Wickremasinghe, who is now backing Fonseka. Fonseka was a personal choice of Rajapakse as the army chief but they two fell out after the war ended last year.
The role of Fonseka is appreciated by people, but more credit is given to the president due to his leadership qualities during the war, according to the survey findings.
Most people see the president as a strong leader who did not bow to international pressure to stop the punishing military campaign against the LTTE. IANS

Bandula mudalali Haal walin ayeth Koti gaanak gahala.

As a first step they were able to persuade the cabinet to extend the duty waiver on rice imports initially granted only for November and December 2009 to March 21, 2010.
Such a lengthy duty waiver for rice imports is extraordinary as Sri Lanka’s own harvest season begins in mid January which mean that rice imports are not necessary after the middle of the month.
This year continued rice imports are particularly unnecessary as peace and the inclusion of northern — particularly the Mannar rice bowl in the annual harvest guarantees a bumper local crop.
Therefore the extended duty waiver certainly wasn’t extended on account of an impending shortage of rice or to provide rice to consumers at reasonable prices. As will soon become clear the duty waiver was extended for one reason alone; to enrich Bandula Gunawardena.
Step two
Taking advantage of this extended duty waiver our partners in crime placed orders for the import of 40,000 tonnes of rice through the STC. Extraordinarily all of this rice was to be delivered between January and March – the height of Sri Lanka’s own harvest season when rice imports are completely unnecessary. Even more extraordinary however was the price being paid for this rice.
While the market price for RRI 6 rice was $360 per tonne the State Trading Corporation placed orders for the import of the same grade of rice at $420, $435 and $520 a tonne.
10,000 tonnes of Myanmar rice was ordered at a cost of $420 a tonne while 20,000 tonnes of rice was ordered from Pakistan at $520 a tonne.
What was going on?
The answer is very simple. Pradeep Gunawardena and Bandula Gunawardena as the men driving the deals were collecting huge commissions for their overvalued orders.
The State Trading Corporation was ordering rice at $420 and $520 per tonne while their suppliers however were purchasing this rice at only 360 dollars leaving sellers with 60 – 140 dollars of clear profit per tonne and of course this excess money was distributed between the Minister his accomplice and their trading partners.
