The much looked forward to Singer Schools U-20 Rugby League kicks off today at 4.15 pm with defending champions St. Peter’s College, Colombo taking on Dharmaraja College, Kandy, in the curtain raiser at St. Peter’s College, grounds.

The last schools rugby season was not that rosy in the contest of organization and participation. Added to that, certain schools were banned from competing and the SLSRFA was even taken to court by various quarters and as a result of it, the glamour of the event was taken away. Idunil Rohitha, the secretary of SLSRFA, speaking to ‘The Island’ said that this year, taking into consideration all what happened last year, the SLSRFA has taken all precautionary measures to prevent such incidents this time around. He further highlighted that the matches have been scheduled in such a way that total of 240 matches to be played in eight weeks at a rapid pace freeing the students well ahead of the G.C.E. A/L examination.

St. Peter’s College, Colombo, unbeaten League champions of last season will field a relatively young team having lost 12 players from the champion outfit of last season. Sanath Martis, the energetic coach of St. Peter’s College, is a master tactician and he will again try his level best to produce a champion combination.

Defending double champions St. Peter’s College are tipped to retain the League and President’s Cup this year too. Isipatana College, Colombo, who were runners-up to St. Peter’s last season, will certainly play their hearts out to try and topple St. Peter’s at the top, under the guidance of coach Bimal Perera. St. Anthony’s College, Kandy and Kingswood College, Kandy are the other top contenders in the championships.

It should be an exciting season of rugby where the top schools confront each other for supremacy.
