Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA) yesterday clarified the position with regard to the runners-up slot taken by Science College Mount Lavinia in the Division 1B inter-schools rugby league tournament.
The issue came when two teams Science and Thurstan ended their quota of nine matches with six wins each with the match between the two said teams being abandoned after over 20 minutes of play in the first half.
At the time of stoppage Science was in the lead having scored seven points but the two sides ended the season on identical points with averages of 29.5 and 3.28 respectively.
St Joseph’s College was clear winners after winning all their nine matches and was way ahead of the two teams. The executive committee of the SLRSFA in issuing the final points table to the media had decided Science as the second best team as they had secured seven points in the match against Thurstan.
The two teams in the meantime made a counter protest with the SLSRFA requesting them to replay the match which Thurstan was not willing to do. With Thurstan contemplating to take legal action the executive committee of SLSRFA clarified the position.
A spokesman for the SLSRFA stated that it clearly states in the hand book that where a game has been abandoned during the first half, the results shall be declared as a draw.
It further states elsewhere that the team scoring more tries in a game declared drawn would be awarded a bonus of 0.5 points. This justifies the decision taken by the SLSRFA to declare Science College the runner-up team which was done with the consultation of lawyers after a special meeting held yesterday.
