Tips given by a UN security advisor:

* Avoid crowded places in Colombo and travelling around at night since
sudden curfews/security checks can't be ruled out.

* Carry your passports/ID cards/business cards.

* Have a mobile phone and key local contact telephone numbers with you.

* If you have to go out at night, keep the interior lights on in the vehicle.

* Always keep a slight distance from the vehicle in front so you can
turn round or into side street if anything happens around you (driver
should be able to see the tyres of the vehicle in front).

* If you are trapped in traffic and bombs or firing is taking place
get on the floor board or crawl out of the vehicle, lie on the ground
and wait for things to quieten down.

* If there is a ditch or drain nearby get in -dirty or not. Shrapnel
and T56 bullets can pierce the doors.

* Don't run or shout.
