Security forces have been put on high alert in Sri Lanka's capital following intelligence inputs that the beleaguered LTTE might strike Colombo, even as a suspected suicide bomber jumped to death today from a multi-storied building to evade arrest.
Intelligence agencies have indicated the possibility of the Tiger rebels striking Colombo after being cornered in a narrow area in the north east, an army official said today.
"We have put the security on alert in Colombo and adjoining areas as the LTTE is facing complete defeat in the few areas that is left under its control in the No-Fire-Zone," the official told PTI.
Earlier in the day, police detected a 32-year old LTTE suspect in a building in the suburbs of the capital. While four suicide jackets were allegedly recovered from his possession, the man jumped to death from the 7th floor apartment.
On Wednesday, police acting on a tip-off by intelligence units, recovered explosives in Colombo that could have caused major destruction. Police spokesman S S P Ranjith Gunasekara said the explosives were found buried in a garage in the city.
He said 18 claymore mines weighing 7.5 kilograms each and 2 Walkie-talkies were among the items recovered.
One person was arrested in connection with the recovery and further investigation is on, Gunasekara said.
