First of all there are 3 types of speakers(To simplify)......
Tweeters=Tweeters are the small speakers which we find in 2.1 or 5.1 etc sets which we call satellite speakers....They play the higher frequency sounds such as cymbals,soprano sounds etc....
Mid range speakers=They play the middle range frequencies...Such as the guitar,piano etc.....They are usually 3 inches and higher...
Woofer=This is the biggest speaker.....with big magnets and very heavy.....They play the low frequency sounds...Bass guitar,cello etc....
Woofers can be placed in any way......They carry their waves in all directions....
Mid range speakers also carry their waves in all directions so they also can be placed in any way....They play low sounds but not as low as a woofer....
Tweeters has to be placed in a certain way.....They have to be aimed at the head.....
A high end setup's satellites will have a tweeter and a mid range speaker! Normal cheapo setups will have a tweeter only........
How to setup the center speaker.....
If you are watching a DVD or playing a game with a EAX capable sound card, 60% of the audio is encoded in to the center channel..It is the most powerful satellite out of all the satellites in a surround set.....For the best possible experience you have to keep the center speaker aiming your face and above the monitor/TV.....6.1 setups which came long time back had a center speaker in the back as well......That also must be placed as explained above.....
The Front Speakers..
These have to be placed as the same level/Hight as the center speaker......The best way is to face them down towards your face......As mentioned above center,front,rear are Tweeters..They have to be aimed in order to get the perfect experience......The distance should be equal as well.....
The Rear speakers..
Same as the front speakers ...Just aim them towards your head......
The sub woofer.....
This has to be placed on a hard surface...This is because, Lets say you keep it on a table? Some of the sound that the woofer produced goes to waste by vibrating the table.....When you keep it on the floor the floor doesn't allow the woofer to vibrate the floor
So the sound is not wasted....
All and all keeping it on a hard surface means reflecting the sound resulting in much better sound...

ES=Extended Surround
Also keep in mind about the wires you use.....In SL the best wire you can get is the transparent wire which has thin copper wires inside.....35bucks a meter.....This wire minimizers the resistance when having to use long wires.....In a normal wire when you drag it too long the sound quality will drop.......
Also most sound cards has a app to test all the speakers....Dont forget to do that also........
