Illegal to use names of Army officers for politics- Police
The police today confirmed that they have been given instructions by the Ministry of Defence to take legal action against any media institution that carry false news items linking the names of serving Army officers with political propaganda.
Police spokesman DIG Nimal Mediwaka told Daily Mirror Online that the police were told to follow the instructions made public last week as was issued to the media by Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara.
Using the names of Senior Army Officers for false political propaganda is illegal, and therefore the media which publish such news are liable to legal action, the military spokesman announced in a statement last week.
The statement said that Section 20 of the gazette extraordinary clearly lays down the punishment that can be meted out under the emergency regulations to those who are engaged in such activities.
This section basically stipulates that if any person or persons or media publish news which are aimed at inciting the public against the State or create public resentment against the implementation of the laws, or provokes rebellion against authority, legal action can be taken against all those who are directly and indirectly involved in such provocative activities.
As Army Officers in service cannot take part in politics and are forbidden; using their names for personal political gains and for false propaganda are absolutely unlawful. (GS)

What about the Ministers who use the name of the Saviour of the Nation directly or indirectly to counter attack the wishes of the General Public. It is not the General who is involved in Politics since he has never given his consent or atleast said anything in favour of his candidature at the next Presidential Elections but it is the general public and the media is only publishing the views. But the Ministers are using his name and showing that al the war victories are due to the President and NOT General Sarath Fonseka. So please take action against these politicians before targetting the general public.

Why do they have to come to politics when people like us are still in politics? Let us rule the country, let them look after IDPs. Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Long live our beloved motherland.

How about the politicians specially from the Government who be-little the war heros? The latest example is the utterences of Hemakumara Nanayakkara where he likened General Fonseka to a puppet.

I think government is over-reacting in this issue. They should not worry too much. Let anybody publish anything.

What would be the next move of GOSL? To ban retired Army officers from entering into politics??

You know what ought to be made illegal? the disenfranchisement of nearly all basic rights of the common man in a supposedly democratic country! then take all those despotic 'leaders' who incite the public with all the provocative things they say and do, to task! then enable the common man to 'issue a gazette' whenever he deems necessary to make embezzlement of public funds, knavery, nepotism, lying and cheating a gullible public 'unlawful' and send those responsible packing. the day all that happens lets consider calling this place 'democratic'.

Everyone of you are missing the point. The media that support the oppersition party are trying to destablise the country and cause a threat to the national security by useing the name of SF for personal gain are breaking the law and should be punished. We can also call them traitors. You guys are with them. The country is lucky because you are in the minority.

Panic has defiantly set in. Rules are laid down only for the public and media . When the GOSL ministers use the term war heroes and link them to elections propaganda its accepted. No astrologer could predict anything , no journalist could write any thing that does not suit their taste . Is this the Sri Lanka that the masses vote for. I hope all these events will strengthen SF towards a “political liberation” of this country. Heroes are not born they are made by circumstances and events.

'Panic has set in it seems' someone says. Looks like panic has set in within the 'outside forces' whose miserable attemps so far, to destablize our country have failed. They dont want to give us a chance to lift our heads after they were defeated militarily. So they are using any desperate measure life the General's name (even though they probably hate him) just to create a rift in the Government. Although many may not like it, effective measures need to be put in place to save our country, particularly after what we have been through over the last 30+ years. This is a very good move by the Government to stop the pandemonium these evil 'external forces' are trying to create using the naviety of our people.

Now , He too can retire & try like Maj. Gen. Janaka Perera. I think he is scared . thinking of the unfortunate faith of our all time hero. He has never dreant this situation i think. This is what Buddha said. "Mahanani, yam deyaka nageemak sema basmakda atha. Ata lo dahamata kampanowena minisa , kawadawath nageemak ho baseemak nodakee." The army should have been in blitz without him at the most wanted hour. I wounder what my fellow Sri Lankans think of it. "Maha loku apekama"
