Single shot of either Oxford-AstraZeneca or Pfizer-BioNTech Covid vaccine reduces chance of needing hospital treatment by more than 80%, analysis in England shows

A single shot of either the Oxford-AstraZeneca or the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid jab reduces the chance of needing hospital treatment by more than 80%, an analysis in England shows.

The Public Health England data showed the effect kicked in three to four weeks after vaccination.

It was based on people aged over 80 who were the first to receive the jab.

Government scientists hailed the result, but stressed that two doses were needed for the best protection.

It comes after similar findings were published by Scottish health authorities last week, which they hailed as "spectacular" .

What the Oxford team noticed recently was that delaying the second jab is more effective.... I posted the following a few days ago.

"The two-dose vaccine developed by the University of Oxford, UK, and Astra-Zeneca could be given to more people by lengthening the interval between jabs. To test the efficacy of this strategy, Andrew Pollard at the University of Oxford and his colleagues examined clinical-trial data from more than 17,000 people, half of whom received the vaccine and the other half a placebo.

The team found that, for intervals greater than six weeks, the longer the gap between jabs, the better the vaccine protected against COVID-19. It was 55% effective in those who received their second dose less than 6 weeks after their first, and 81% effective in those whose second dose was more than 12 weeks after their first. The team also found that a single dose of the vaccine had an efficacy of 76% for the first 90 days after vaccination."

Pfizer is more effective. Israelis published their results after vaccinating 6 Million a few days back. They claim 94% reduction in symptomatic cases.

Even during the clinical trials and also later on with the vaccine drive, it was observed that the older people has lesser side-effects. Many seniors reported milder effects.
This is probably due to the fact that younger adults tend to mount a stronger immune response to vaccines in general.
