Former Foreign Minister MP Mangala Samaraweera told Parliament yesterday that he had taken Galle District MP Sajin Vass Gunawardena to a Buddha Bar in New York when the latter was found spending time in a cheap brothel house in the town.
MP Samaraweera shot back after MP Gunawardena asked him whether he recalled how he (Samaraweera) had taken him to a Buddha Bar.
The recollection of their time in New York came up during the debate on the no-confidence motion against External Affairs Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris.
Deputy Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage urged MP Samaraweera not to tarnish the image of the country by publicly admitting he had visited a brothel while being abroad.
The motion was signed by UNP MP John Amaratunga, Ravi Karunanayake, Lakshman Kiriella and Wijedasa Rajapaksa. The UNP MPs of the Reformists were absent in the House and only a few front benchers could be seen.
DNA MP Ajith Kumara said that it was not the time to move a no-confidence motion against one Minister. The MP said that the Opposition should target the government and there was no point in taking on individual ministers.
Minister Maithripala Sirisena said that the motion had been moved by a party which had lost confidence of people of this country. That motion was an example of the low level the once Grand Old Party had fallen today.
The motion wrongly accused Prof. Peiris of overstaying in China, he said adding that Prof. Peiris had been there for the country’s sake. "I do not indulge myself in discussing how Foreign Ministers during UNP administrations abused their privileges from 1977 to 1994, he said.
UNP MP Ravi Karunanayake said that his party did not want to save the name of a Foreign Minister but the name of the country.
Higher Education Minister S. B. Dissanayake said that the UNP had brought the motion against the Foreign Minister to please the international community.
Public Administration and Home Affairs Minister W. D. J. Seneviratne said that UNP was a party which had once brought a no confidence motion against Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar.
