SL Housemaids abused, yet again by Saudi Maniacs!!

Mar 29, Colombo: Another group of Sri Lankan house maids who faced severe hardships at their working places in the Middle East have returned to the country yesterday.

Sri Lanka's Foreign Employment Bureau said a total of 40 women workers reached the country after spending some time in welfare camps of their respective countries of employment.

According to the Bureau the women have worked as house maids in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Bahrain.

Most of them came back even without receiving their salaries while some others have even received injuries at the hands of abusive employers.

The Foreign Employment Bureau has sent the women to their villages after providing them with food and money at the Katunayake International Airport.

Respective authorities should make the people aware of these kind of incidents...Unfortunately that's what never happens as most of them wanna some how export our people to foreign countries and get the cash in their hands

I agree with you, but we must also admit that the situation for these women are much better now than it was 10 years back, I remember those days there were fake agencies every where in SL, and they were cheated even before they even set foot in that country... now I think at least that situation has been looked into and these women get training etc. before they leave the country, which reduce their stress too!

I believe this happens mostly because of the lack of cooperation from Middle East authorities rather than ours, do we know that any action has taken against these employers? Their govts. can blacklist employers who ill treat their workers impose fines etc. are these kind of measures already taken to assure worker safety?

Well I wouldn't expect they will secure a workers rights when they simply cannot even secure their own women rights but one thing can be done from our side is to have a condition that if a worker returns to SL under these conditions the Agency who send him must also pay compensation to the worker, that way next time these agencies will take extra effort to send people only to those employers whose record is good!
