SLPL white elephant to cost millions

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) which is reeling under the massive debts running into billions of rupees and is gasping for breath is all set to lose further millions of rupees through the forthcoming Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL) Twenty20 tournament, sources claimed.
“It is not clear who is going to meet this loss and how and where will the money come from. It is equally mysterious who actually will receive all the money” one insider told “Daily Mirror” yesterday.
The owner of the tournament Somerset Entertainment Ventures (SEV) signed a five-year contract with SLC in July last year through which SLC receives Rs. 30 million a year with a five percent increment every year.
However, sources claimed that hosting the SLPL alone would cost more than Rs. 30 million, resulting in a certain loss for SLC.
The SLPL has been a mystery tournament from the beginning and little information has appeared in the public domain, though there is less than 40 days to go for the advertised start of the tournament.
Secrecy surrounds how the players will be selected and allocated for each team, which would be done arbitrarily by whoever selects the players. Analysts have also pointed out several drawbacks such as the probability of reduced competitiveness due to lack of financial rewards for excellence.
How much the local players would be paid has also not been announced yet, while the foreign players would be paid between US $ 10,000-30,000, a pittance compared to the rates at the IPL.
It is obvious that the tournament is going to receive only lukewarm reception among the public following the recent World Cup and the IPL tournament which were enough to saturate the enthusiasm of even the keenest of fans.
It hardly has the star power of the IPL featuring some retired, over-the-hill overseas players while even most of the top Sri Lanka players will be absent as they will be doing Sri Lanka ‘A’ duty in England.
India is the obvious money spinner in world cricket and without a huge Indian following the tournament is bound to be financial disaster.
Reports from India indicated that the tournament would be bereft of any of the top Indian stars. India team will be engaged in a tour of England while the India ’A’ will also be involved in a tour of Australia prior to the Emerging Players’ tournament to be held in Brisbane.
A top BCCI official had confirmed to the Indian media that even though Indian players have signed up for the SLPL, very few will be able to participate in the tournament. The league has the sanction of the BCCI but players are only allowed to participate if they are not involved in national duty, the Indian Premier League and domestic competition, he had added.
Besides, India’s tour of England and the aftermath of the IPL and the ICC World Cup are likely to shy away the advertisers from the SLPL and added the absence of top players is almost a no-hope situation in India said an industry source.
The Tournament is to be held from July 19 to August 4, and the weather conditions are also likely to pose a threat for the prospects.
At the time the deal was signed, little was known about the company which was alleged to have been formed in Singapore just a few days prior to the signing, bringing back the memories of the Nimbus TV deal that had been struck a few years ago resulting in SLC losing millions of dollars.
Since then, a little more information has surfaced about the company. According to information in the web, the Singapore based Somerset Entertainment Ventures Pvt Ltd (SEV) engages in the business of providing sports and hospitality-focused, marketing and consultancy services. SEV had won the SLPL rights in collaboration with Total Sports Asia (TSA). They have appointed TSA as their representatives for all commercial arrangements based on their long standing relationships and excellent track record for being the best in the business. SEV owns commercial rights associated with the SLPL. The SEV chairman is Sandeep Bhammer. He is joined at the Board level by Chris McDonald, ex-head of Ten Sports and Prof. Stefan Szymanski, one of the world’s leading sports economists and Director of Sports at the Cass Business School, City University, London.
Ten Sports has been SLC TV rights partner for a long time and McDonald has extensive knowledge in Sri Lanka, having dealt closely with SLC officials during the past decade.
SLPL TV Broadcast rights in Sri Lanka have been secured by Carlton Sports Network (CSN) who plan to extend their reach to an island wide coverage before July 10 on UHF22 and also on DialogTv Channel 75 and PEOTV Channel 9.
SLC interim committee secretary Nishantha Ranatunga is the CEO of the CSN Channel.
The seven-teams of the SLPL will compete over 18 days approximately. The teams will play each other once. The top four teams will qualify for the semi-finals. All the games will be played at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Each team will be a mix of Sri Lankan and international players. Total squad size will be between 16 and 18 players. The playing XI should consist of minimum seven Sri Lankan players and a minimum of four international players out of which one should be a Sri Lankan under-21 cricketer. There can be five foreigners in a squad.
