voice – data – broadband internet – email – PBX – multimedia services on a single broadband connection
Monday, 8th September, 2008, Colombo Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT), the nation’s number one integrated communications service provider has extended its fibre-to-the-building (SLT Metro Ethernet) project regionally to support advanced data, voice, video and broadband Internet services. SLT Metro Ethernet services are mainly meant for high end business customers and SME customers to provide end-to-end intelligent solutions through a very high speed broadband connectivity.
Fibre-to-the-building project – SLT Metro Ethernet
In 2006, SLT embarked on this project to improve broadband connectivity to large commercial institutions. Under this project, known as ‘Fibre-to-the-Building Connectivity’, SLT has already laid 70 km of optical fibre comprising of 13 rings in the Colombo Metropolitan Area as well as connected more than 110 important buildings. This laid the foundation for promising wide area network technologies such as Metro Ethernet, with the ring topology architecture ensuring a far greater level of redundancy and greater network availability.
SLT Metro Ethernet has a Fiber Core Ring Network which connects Colombo Central, Slave Island, Liberty Plaza, Havelock Town and Maradana at a speed of 10Gbps, since these areas have a large demand for high speed data services. Further 13 Nos. of Fibre Access Rings with a speed of 10Gbps were implemented at these locations that have connected more than 110 high rise buildings, which include almost all the head offices of corporate customers in Colombo. This was the phase-I of the Metro Ethernet Project and Metro Ethernet Services are now available in all these buildings.
Fibre-to-the-building project expansion to other regions of the country
With the increasing demand for high-speed data services outside of Colombo, Metro Ethernet Network was expanded to other regions under the Phase-II of this project. Now it covers up to Anuradhapura in the North Central Province, Ampara in the Eastern Province and Hambantota in the Southern Province of the country, as well as major cities such as Gampaha, Negombo, Chillaw, Kurunegala, Kegalle, Galgamuwa, Matale, Kandy, Nuwaraeliya, Badulla, Hatton, Nawalapitiya, Awissawella, Ratnapura, Kalutara, Moratuwa, Mt. Lavinia, Ambalangoda, Galle, Matara, Kelaniya, Wattala, Kotte, Nugegoda, Ratmalana, Maharagama and Piliyandala. More cities are to be connected soon depending on the customer demand.
Residential services
Metro Ethernet Network will also be used to provide triple play services such as IPTV (internet protocol television), broadband Internet, VoD (video on demand), MoD (Media on demand), Video gaming, voice and home PBX services to high-end customers residing in high rise apartment buildings in Colombo.
“SLT Metro Ethernet” brings the network edge to the customer’s doorstep to deliver cost effective, high speed, scalable, reliable and multi-service Ethernet access to customers through state-of-the-art MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching) technology.
Corporate Services
SLT always pay much more attention to the corporate sector to facilitate their businesses by using latest technologies. Metro Ethernet Network is set to bridge services of managed corporate networks and these services can now be provided island wide. Modern medium to large-scale businesses demand high-speed data transfer, broadband Internet and video services. SLT’s Metro Ethernet which provides end-to-end high speed connectivity would be the best fit for Business Customers who intend to strengthen their business operations using SLT’s IP (internet protocol) based Intelligent Solutions. This service also features next-generation communications solutions based on IP-MPLS platform and similar advanced technologies, enabling the delivery of improved IP-based services such as;
* IP/VPN (internet protocol virtual private network) for voice and data communication
* Multipoint to Multipoint – VPLS (Virtual private local area network services)
* LAN (local area network) interconnections
* Network resilience and traffic engineering features through the state-of-the-art IP MPLS technology.
* Multimedia services
* VLL (virtual leased lines) - point to point data connectivity
* MLLN (Managed Lease Line Networks)
* Broadband internet
* IPLC (international private leased circuits) - broadband international connectivity
Future broadband demand
SLT has the capability to serve the future demands of any corporate entity in Sri Lanka, with its giant infrastructure for international and domestic connectivity. This can serve any customer’s communication needs, especially in terms of IP services. Also, the SLT internet Data Centre (iDC) plays an important role by providing data hosting services to SLT corporate customers, with the highest international security standards for customers’ valuable business critical data.
SLT has the largest international bandwidth for broadband services and is the only telecommunication company in Sri Lanka that operates at aggregate bandwidth of 3 Gbps in its international internet backbone. The backbone consists of multiple optical fibre under-sea cables that offer a highly reliable service to its valuable customers even in the case of an under-sea cable damage, which, in the past, has affected many other service providers both local and foreign.
