What is IPTV Service?
TV service which is delivered using IP (Internet Protocol) technology- this is the same technology which is used in Internet Service. In this service the TV channels are encoded in IP format and delivered to TV through a Set Top Box. The IP TV Service also includes Video on Demand Service which is similar to watching Video CDs/DVDs using VCD/DVD player. Movies, Instructional Videos and other content shall be available to customers in the IP TV Services.
IPTV operates on a different premise than traditional satellite or cable television in that only selected programming and on-demand content are delivered to the consumer. With Satellite and cable, all channels are being pushed all the time to the consumer's home rather than a per-selection basis. IPTV's ability to provide two-way communication (you request a program from the TV guide and the program is delivered to you) offers true interactivity for the customer with the environment. HDTV, movies, past TV shows, and all other content can be distributed on demand and service providers can tailor the requested content and advertising based on customer preference.
IPTV also offers such potential as on-demand video gaming and because it is using your broadband connection, it can interact with other Internet services such as Voice over IP (VoIP). Consumers may have caller ID displayed on their television. The potential is truly unlimited.
To watch IPTV, a person sitting at home needs a computer, or set-top box, plugged into the TV.

This could bring about more convergence between our hardware, such as computers, TV sets, digital video recorders, and set-top boxes, as well as software and applications that we already use on computers.
Who is offering IPTV?
In Sri Lanka, only SLT offers IPTV at the moment. SLT has already begun rolling out their IPTV initiative, called SLT IPTV.
What are the tariffs for the service?
The tariff will be attractive and affordable. It will be announced along with the Launching of service.
Any pre-requisites for IPTV services?
SLT Landline telephone with ADSL connectivity
A set top Box (STB) to connect the ADSL modem/router to the TV
Who will be providing the Set Top Box?
The STB shall be provided by SLT.
Is SLT broadband connection (Internet) compulsory to avail IPTV?
The SLT Telephone Line is must, but SLT broadband connection (Internet) is not mandatory.
What services shall be available?
Bouquet of TV channels and Video on Demand services shall be available initially during trails. Other services/ content shall be introduces progressively.
Will I be able to use normal telephone and internet service along with IP TV Service?
Yes, all the 3 services can work together-
Normal Telephone services
ADSL Internet service
IPTV service
How can video-on-demand (VoD) be as compelling as renting a DVD?
The main driving benefits of VoD are sold as convenience and choice. However, with their comprehensive features, DVDs are perceived as much better value than just watching a video stream of the main future.
SLT IPTV offers armchair convenience to you to view movies at your own pace. Even the movies that are not available from DVD vendors can be viewed via SLT IPTV. Renting or Purchasing DVDs are tiresome and time consuming, but IPTV allows you to find and view quality movies at a single point.
