It seems that SLT is enforcing a download speed for file download sites since of late during the morning to late evening hours. Rapidshare, etc only download at around 8-14kbps.

However if you use a file downloader which supports multiple threads then you see that you get your 100kbps, clearly indicating that they are throttling downloads per request

I tried the same links with my sisters Dialog 512K line and found it was giving full speed (50kbps) for the same link which was coming down at 7kbps on my 1MB line, proof that it was not a site issue but something SLT is enforcing.

Have you also noticed that the speed of the connection is very slow during the day,a and switches into a faster speed at an instant around 12 midnight-1AM and again drops to a very slow link at around 8-9AM?

Another big problem is that SLT keeps refreshing your IP more than the 1 per day they say they do, completing disrupting your downloads. In some cases the DNS resolution does not work and I have had to use third party DNS servers to continue working.

When you report this to SLT, what they do is send their team whod download a file from the SLT site which downloads at high speed since its internal and state there is no issues with the line, its a problem with the site we are downloading from and bugger off.....

Seems like upgrading to the 1MB line is just a pure waste of cash, as SLT clearly does not have the trunk speed to support their customers, crap indeed.

In case fellow 1MB users are not having these problems, please do respond so that i know its a problem only with my connection.

You are absolutely right I had the same problem with my 1mb line I complained couple of times and I decided to change it back to 512 now I get the full speed most of the time I recommend you do the same no point paying more for dialup speed

Thanks mate, seems like it's the only alternative, as I doubt if the folks at SLT are gonna sort things for us. I wonder if its a devious scheme to get the subscribers away the 1MB package offering, and to eliminate this from their offering?

Just tried one more check with SLT and finally this Saturday the technical chap said the following,

• They are having problems with the compression on the 1MB connections which is limiting single thread download speeds
• They do not know if they can resolve the problem and have no idea when they can
• They confirmed that the single download speeds are higher on the 512K link the the 1MB line

However if you happen to be mainly downloading from torrents and sites supporting multi downloads (e.g. Hotfile, mediafire) you will not notice any reduction as multi-threads will enable you to still achieve the high speeds.

However try downloading from rapidshare, or any other site that only allows a single thread and you will notice that most of the times the speeds are 8-14kbps. Test on speedtest would also give max results of 0.1-0.3 Mb/s at best for the male/singapore/california servers.

Question remains how they managed to provide high speeds until last month on the 1MB line remains a mystery to me, and not being truthful to the customers is another low

So as our man "mission" said, if you are not purely on torrents, you are way better saving your cash and and going back to the 512K line.

even SLT ppl called and asked us to change the line to 512kbps,cuz they cnt give the accepted bandwidth to da 1mbps line. they said they wud transfer it to 512kbps for free. they said sum crap abt rules n regulations stuff... which I didnt get at all, so that they cnt give max speed to that line...

so 1mbps line sucks... to me specially for browsing.
