Think lithium-ion is more about size than the price. You need something small to power vehicles, houses (inverters). Any other sort of battery would be good for large scale stuff. So end of the day the purpose is what dictates everything.

There are different methods in use, Direct Industrial heat as well as Thermophotovoltaic (TPV) technology, which converts the stored heat directly into electricity with no moving parts, the system can also deliver on-demand electricity to industrial customers.
